The new American opera by Charles Wake-
field Cadman, called "The Witch of Salem," had
its premiere at the Auditorium in Chicago on
Wednesday night of last week. The book is
by Nellie Richmond Eberhart. According to re-
ports from Chicago .it was hailed as the best
American opera ever produced with the possible
exception of Victor Herbert's "Natoma."

As the title suggests, the atmosphere is based
upon the witch-hunting craze of early New Eng-
land settlers involving witchcraft, love, false ac-
cusations and other dramatic situations for
which Mr. Cadman has written some highly at-
tractive music. A Puritan hymn in various
treatments dominates the score.
Charles Hackett, as Arnold Talbot, sang and
played the leading role. Other stars were Irene
Pavloska, Lorna Doone Jackson and Augusta
Lenska. Besides the first-class singing the
artists brought forth many favorable comments
for their diction in singing the English book.

Jimmy Ague, an artist who has been quite suc-

announcing the featuring of the number by Mr.
Ague. A reproduction of the window is here-

Three New Numbers
From Villa Moret, Inc.
When Charles Daniels, of Villa Moret, Inc.,
the well-known Pacific Coast publishing organ-
ization, recently visited the New York offices
of the company, 1595 Broadway, he introduced
three new songs. Two of these are typical love
songs of popular type and the other is a more
elaborate, but popular, song and instrumental
piece. The two popujar love songs are "Kiss
Me to Sleep" and "When My Sweetheart Loves
Me." The song and instrumental selection is
known as "Persian Rug." This latter, while
Oriental in type, is given a most modern setting
with words of current flavor.
