voluminous catalogs covering some ninety pub-
lishing houses, naturally is a business that
has a wealth of details. In fact, the title of
every composition, its key and arrangement in-
volve in some manner a detail. To simplify the
details of the standard sheet music business
should therefore be the object of every pub-
lisher, of every traveling representative, of every
retailer and of every clerk. To lessen the
amount of work, to eliminate superfluous moves
and to arrange orderly the selling, purchasing,
receiving, shipping and stocking and giving
service to music buyers should be the objective
of everyone interested in the prosperity of the
retailer and the industry as a whole.
It would not be out of place for the Music
Publishers' Association of the United States to
appoint a committee and to appropriate funds
that would have as an object the standardiza-
tion in a simple form of the sheet music busi-
ness. Such a plan would make for greater effi-
ciency and, if possible, do away with unneces-
sary moves, the card indexing of all records
and methods of like caliber which would tend
to eliminate details and allow more time for
the retailer to give to the broader aspects of
his business. No other line of music has as
many details as the standard sheet music busi-
ness; it absorbs the dealer's time and energy and
over a period of years where it is necessary for
the owner of the establishment to care for both
large and small matters it has a tendency to
smother his initiative.
A case in point where a retail establishment
has endeavored to eliminate, if possible, some
of the many details of the sheet music business
was inaugurated some time ago by Oliver Chali-
foux, the well-known sheet music dealer of
Birmingham, Ala., who, in addition to his retail
business, has, by the elimination of many de-
tails and the simplification of his order blanks

Mr. Chalifoux has simplified his business in
many directions; he has eliminated a remarkable
number of details, but we refer here particu-
larly to his methods of taking customers' orders,
recording same, their delivery and his supple-
mentary orders to individual publishers, or his
other sources of supply. For this purpose we
reproduce two of the important blanks he uses,
