such as the Richmond Standard Music Guide
and Richmond's Popular Music Index, both of
which are issued primarily for the consumer,
there is not so much need to select the type
of person for whom they are issued. For, after
all, such general publications are made to pro-
duce sales in both selective groups and for the
ordinary pianist for some entertainment, etc.
With these latter, as with all other catalogs,
the vital need is distribution. No matter how
well a catalog is prepared, or what its purposes,
the lack of movement or distribution eliminates
their functions, which are to produce sales.

The Difference Between Publications Intended
for the Consumer and Those Intended for
the Dealer Himself
In some af the past annual gatherings of the
National Association of Sheet Music Dealers
the question of style, size and best use of pub-
lishers' and dealers' catalogs of all kinds has
come up for discussion. This question is after
all very important, for, outside of the personal
contact, such material carries the weight of
creating sales.
The large volume of catalogs of all kinds, the
diversified purposes for which they are issued
do require thought and attention in their dis-
tribution. They should be presented through
the mail or otherwise with the same care that
particular publications are placed before pro-
spective purchasers at the counter. If this is
done, and the recipient gets publicity material
that meets the needs and plans of his or her
work or entertainment, sales in considerable vol-
ume are bound to result. This care, thought
and attention applies to catalog publications of
selective works.

bers. Included in these is "My Dream Moon,"
which has been featured both as a vocal and
instrumental number. This is probably the
quickest success this enterprising firm has ever
put over, for records show that it not only has
been used by leading orchestras and vaudeville
performers, but, in addition, has been recorded
by practically every talking machine record and
