THE SHEET MUSIC DEALERS AND THE HOLIDAY DEMAND
SONGS THAT SELL
Deal;:rs Need No Longer Look for Inactive Period Just Before Christmas-Specialization During
the Next Few Weeks Should Bring the Dealer Good Business
...

Som e yea rs ba ck with th e nea r appr oach of
the holid ay season the sales of the legitimate
sheet mu sic store took a co n ~ id erable drop. For
th e past two seasons, however, thi s sit ua tion
has und e rgone a radi ca l change and th e wide
awake dea le r no lo n ge r need look for wa rd t o
an ina ctiv e period just before Ch ristma s
Of course, the dealer th a t se ll s musical mer
chandis e, sma ll goo ds, part icular ly sax ophones,
ukuleles, etc ., has foune! a r ea d y sa le of such
products to parents an d ot hers w h o find such
goo d s aCCf'ptab le and eve n valuabl e gifts. In
co njunction with the sa le of all such mu s ica l
in s t ruillen ts the s heet lI1us ic d ea ler, w h ether h e
han dles l11u sical m e r cha ndi se or not, ha s all
ad dition a l markn for the ~a l e of mu s ical com
positions , books, folios , et c., pub li s hed fo r these
va rious in s tru ll1ents .
Th e sa le of excl u sive C hri stmas music has
als o s ho wn substant ia l in crease s in rec ent yea r s
and thi s, too, tend s to kee p the sheet mu sic de
partm ent, o r store, act ive in the holida y pe riod.
It is, h owever, important, in order to get the
mo st out of s uch sales, fo r a di s play to be
ma de of s uc h m ater ial ea rly e nou g h to create
th e sale befo re the approach of the holiday
season.
Not o nl y should w indo ws be dev oted to a
di sp lay of C hrist mas compos itions, but a fre
qu ent s howin g sho uld be made of saxophon e,
ukul e le an d othe r fol ios whi ch are importa nt
accessories to th e giving of such in s truments
a s p r ese nts. A di s pla y ac ts as a sugges t ion an d
creates the add iti o na l sa les , and,. of course,
g ives th e ad dition a l profit.
The window d is play, howeve r, is not enou gh
to get th e utmo s t o ut of s uch sa les as, par- .
' ticlllarl y durin g the Chr istmas seaso n, a con
sp ic uous place should be tiiven such publi cat ions
o n th e co unter or about the store and w herever
possible a s ho wi n ~ s h ould be made of any di s
play materia l furnished by th e p ubli s her. Such
s howin gs a re th e means of mercha ndising th e
go ods with a minim um of sal es e nergy. In fa ct,
more often than not they act effi cientl y as
sil e nt sa lesmen .
Another reason why the legiti mate s heet
m us ic dea ler doe s not ha ve to look forw ar d to
a du ll pe r iod durin g the ho lid ay season can
be credit ed to the fact that he is to-day getting
his sh are of th.e sale of popular mu sic. Som e
seasons back when the syndicate stores took a
more prom inent part in the sale of such music
a t a lower pric e th a n wha t the dealer could
profitably handle it hi s vo lume of such bu siness
was not so large.
Th e present s itua ti on has worke d o ut advan
tageously fo r the dealer, but, un doubte dly, he
ca n furth er hi s interest by a spec ializat ion on
partic ul a r items during t he coming weeks.
