WASHINGTON, D. C, December 26.—Complaint
regarding the so-called music tax, or rather the
royalty demanded of theatre owners by music
publishers for the public performance of copy-
righted music, has been filed with the Department
of Justice by certain moving picture associa-
tions, it has been learned. No details regarding the
complaint have been given out by the Depart-
ment as it desired to avoid unnecessary pub-
licity until it is determined whether the Govern-
ment can take any action in the matter. It is
stated, however, that the Department has been
working on the subject for some time past, on
representations made by theatre owners and
others.
It is understood that certain music publishers
have interested themselves with the motion pic-
ture people, but the attitude of the music pub-
lishers in general has not yet been made evident
to the Department. A decision regarding what
action will be taken in the matter is expected
within a month or so.
