PORTLAND,
ORE., January
3.—"Clui
Chin
Chow" appeared recently in this city and played
to immense audiences. The music particularly
made an impression and such numbers as "Any
Time Is Kissing Time," "Cobbler's Song" and
other tuneful numbers received the distinct de-
mand at the various counters.
Mrs. Octavio Garrett, manager of the sheet
music department at Eiler's, states that one of
the best sellers at present is the Remick num-
ber, "I Know." In the classical sheet music
department of this house "The Icicle" and "Boats
of Mine" are the favorites.
The Seiberling-Lucas Music House reports
the new Sherman, Clay & Co.'s numbers are
showing every indication of becoming big hits.
"Sicily," published by Daniels & Wilson, of
San Francisco, is also showing up to good ad-
vantage.
"Avalon" and "Ueautiful Annabel Lee" are still
the leading numbers in point of sales in the
Remick song shop. This is one of the most
popular stores in the city.
One of the recent visitors here was Mose
Cumble, professional manager of Jerome -H.
Remick & Co., whose headquarters are in New
York City. This branch is in charge of Taylor
C. White.
FORMS COMPANY TO PUBLISH SONG
James W harry Lewis, conductor of the or-
chestra in the American Theatre, Oakland, Cal.,
recently played a number entitled "Evening,"
composed by himself and Tessa Dent, which
was received with so much enthusiasm that a
publishing firm, to be known as the American
Music Pub. Co., has been formed for the pur-
pose of marketing the number. Mr. Lewis' pre-
vious experience as a composer has been his
arrangement of musical scores for several
shows, including "The Branding Iron."
"Irene," the musical show now playing at the
Vanderbilt Theatre, New York, this week cele-
brated the breaking of all records for continuous
performances of any musical show playing one
theatre in this country. Previously the other
high marks were the thirty-seven weeks of the
original "Florodora" show and the forty-eight
weeks' record set by "Oh, Boy!"
Another record that this successful musical
comedy has attained is the continued popular-
ity— almost universal, one would say—of the
song hits of the show "Irene," "Alice Blue
Gown" and "Castle of Dreams." In addition to
these numbers having a steady sale in sheet
music form another indication of their popular-
ity is shown by the frequency with which the
various talking machine record and player roll
organizations are reissuing them in both song
and instrumental form.
There are now four "Irene" shows touring the
country, all of them enjoying success. Leo
Feist, Inc., the publisher of the music, has in-
augurated quite an original method of supple-
menting the publicity the songs received
through the shows in the various towns by
using quarter-page advertisements in the local
papers, which does much to encourage the trade
to make special displays and give other co-
operation.
PARAMOUNT ACQUIRES NEW SONG
Allen McQuhae, the new Irish tenor, who is
scoring a success in this country, recently re-
turned from his second tour of Texas this sea-
son. On his first trip in October he made such
a favorable impression that it was found neces-
sary by his managers to send him back for a
second time. His bookings included engage-
ments in Dallas, Ft. Worth, Galveston, Hous-
ton, Beaumont, San Antonio, Marshall, Waco,
Austin and other points. He is now making a
short stay in New York for the purpose of rest-
ing and making several records for one of the
leading talking machine companies, after which
he will make a tour of the Northwest, includ-
ing North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, Min-
neapolis and Iowa.
t
Among the songs that Mr. McQuhae has
programed with great success are James H.
Rogers' "Heart's Delight" and Edward J. Walt's
"Lassie o' Mine." Both numbers are published
by the Sam Fox Pub. Co., Cleveland, O.
