to month during the forepart of this year, is the
work of Miss Caroline L. Sumner, of Nor-
wood, N. Y.
"Smile On" is a standard work, having a
popular appeal and issued with a title page
that attracts immediate attention. This has re-
sulted in dealers in various parts of the country
making special window displays of the number
during the last few weeks.
Herewith is reproduced a recent window of
the Hackett Music Co., of Glens Falls, N. Y.,
which, as can readily be seen, is an artistic eye-
catcher.
Anjong the concert artists singing "Smile On"
is the well-known star, Elsie Baker. This, to-
gether with the fact that it is frequently used
in community sings, will, without doubt, in-
crease the sales of this song, which is already
a very good seller.

French Society of Authors and Composers Pro-
hibiting Public Playing of Works
The publishing firm of Van Alstyne & Curtis
has opened up professional offices in the Strand
Theatre Building, New York City, under the
management of Billy Thompson.
Bob Roberts and Billy Collins have also been
added to the staff. A big professional campaign,
supplementing the earlier activities in that direc-
tion, has been inaugurated on the song "Some
Little Bird," which is showing up well in the
point of popularity and sales, and promises to
become a great favorite.
The following is a report which recently was
cabled from Paris:
Modern music is liable to disappear from
French concert programs following a decision
by the French Society of Authors and Com-
posers to impose a tax on all recitals of their
works. At the Conservatoire recently Edouard
Kisler, in a concert of modern music, was pre-
vented from playing modern French music as a
result of the ruling by the Society, and which
v\as signed by Gabriel Faure and other com-
posers, denying him the use of their composi-
tions. As a result the pianist played old French
and German numbers. Half the audience de-
manded their money back.
TRANSFERRED FROM THE COAST
William Pearce, of Fred Fisher, Inc., has been
transferred from the San Francisco office of that
lirm to the Chicago office and has been succeeded
on the Pacific Coast by Herbert Walker.
George Piantadosi, the New York professional
manager of the company, is now in Chicago
assisting in the Spring campaign.
