THE MUSIC TRADE REVIEW
HOW BEHNING IDEALS ARE BEING STEADILY MAINTAINED
Henry Behning, President of the Behning Piano Co., Tells Interesting Incident Which Shows the
Reason for the Increasing Demand for and Popularity of Behning Pianos and Players
"There have been many occasions upon which
the superior merits of the Behning pianos and
player-pianos have been manifested," said Henry
Behning, president of the Behning Piano Co.,
133rd street and Alexander avenue, New York,
to a representative of The Review, "but none
has been more forceful than an incident which
occurred recently. H. A. Gould, of Barre, Vt.,
who handles high-grade pianos and musical
merchandise, and is also an experienced tuner
Henry Behning
possessed of a critical ear, wrote us as follows:
'1 am an experienced tuner and a piano has to
suit me before it suits my customer. 1 never
recommend a piano unless it really has merit.
If your goods conform to my ideal, my business
will be worth something to you.'
"The answer which we sent to this letter
brought an order, and the best proof that I
can show that the Behning instruments conform
to his ideal is this letter which we received
from him after the instrument had been deliv-
ered: 'I hope it will give you as much pleasure
to read the following as it gives me to write it,'
says Mr. Gould. 'The Style F Behning No.
47763 has arrived and I wish to tell you that
it is, to my m/ind, the best piano I have re-
ceived from any manufacturer for a long time.
The case represents real efficiency in case build-
ing. The tone is beautiful and the action is
all right. This piano approaches perfection ac-
cording to my idea, and I have been dealing in
pianos for thirty-five years. I wish all my
trade demanded this class of goods, for I love
to handle the best.'
"It is only natural," continued Mr. Behning,
"that we are^ very proud of such commendation

as this. In fact, we have a large number of
testimonials sent to us voluntarily, all of which
speak in the highest terms of the Behning prod-
uct. It is the natural pride which we take in
giving the trade the very highest standard of
quality in all our instruments which has
prompted us at all times to adhere strictly to
the manufacturing of nothing but instruments
which contain the very best material we can
buy, and which are produced by piano-makers
who have long been in our service, and who
know what the requirements of a piano manu-
facturer of the old school are, as well as those
of a select class of trade."
The Behning Piano Co. to-day is one of the
busiest in the East. During the last few years
the reputation of the Behning pianos and player-
pianos has become world-wide. In many for-
eign lands as well as throughout the United
States, these instruments are handled by the
most representative dealers. Since its estab-
lishment in 1861 by Henry Behning, Sr., the
quality of the product has never been allowed
to deteriorate, and in fact in many respects
where improvement was found possible the
value of the instrument has been strengthened.
The Behning Piano Co., like all manufacturers,
has had serious obstacles to overcome in manu-
facturing instruments during the last few years.
But, under the guidance of Henry Behning and
Gustave Behning, it has not only successfully
maintained the quality of the product, irre-
spective of the rising cost of materials and
labor, but has also held intact the Behning
factory organization, which is composed of
skilled piano-makers of the old school, a valu-
able asset toward the assurance of uniform
production, and has also through the develop-
ment of an efficient sales organization combined
the quality of the product with a service which
has spelled success and an ever-increasing de-
mand for the Behning pianos and player-pianos.
Every man connected with the Behning or-
ganization understands thoroughly the practical
management of the business as well as the
financing and merchandising of the concern.
Henry Behning takes special pride in tone pro-
duction, and it is under his personal supervision
that the quality of tone is kept up to its well-
known standard at all times. Mr. Behning may
be seen daily inspecting the instrumlents in the
various processes of manufacture throughout
the factory, and no instrument can be shipped
without having his final approval as to tone,
workmanship and finish.
As sales manager of the organization Paul
Fink is one of the best and favorably known
traveling men in the country, and, besides hav-
ing had a wide experience in merchandising, is
also a practical player man, always going on
the road equipped with a knowledge which he
can use readily in assisting dealers who either
have a merchandising or a mechanical problem
to be solved. Under his demonstration the most
delicate interpretation of the music of the great
masters has been forcefully impressed upon the
buying public and the dealer by the use of the
Behning player, an instrument which holds an
enviable position owing to its ease of opera-
tion, responsiveness and power of reproduction.
C. A. Eyles, who has recently been traveling
throughout the Pacific Slope in the interest
of the company, is another member of the or-
ganization who is thoroughly posted on prac-
tical matters pertaining to player construction.
It is therefore the living up to high ideals
combined with a faithful and efficient organiza-
tion which is keeping the Behning product in
the foreground and guaranteeing not only to
the Behning Piano Co. but also to its dealers
successful business for the future.
