NEW CANADIAN COPYRIGHT LAW
Bill Now Before Canadian Parliament Repre-
sents a Badly Needed Piece of Legislation—
Modeled After United States Statute
OTTAWA, CAN., April 10.—For the first time
the Dominion of Canada is to have a copyright
law which will give ample protection to dra-
matic, music and book copyrights of all kinds
and which provides heavy penalties for the
pirating of plays.
The bill, which is now before Parliament, pro-
vides for the new copyright law, and has

the support of the Government and of the
American theatrical interests, which have suf-
fered heavily because of lack of copyright pro-
tection in Canada. Ligon Johnson, attorney
for the United Managers' Protective Associa-
tion of New York, was here this week in con-
ference with Government officials over the new
bill and has strongly urged its passage, which
will undoubtedly be effected, as there is prac-
tically no opposition.
The Canadian law will be very much like the
United States copyright law, calling for registra-
tion along the same lines and the issuing of a
certificate of copyright. American authors will
then be able to copyright their works here in
the same manner that they apply for copyright
in the United States.
It is possible that Canada and the United
States may negotiate a mutual agreement for
the extension of a copyright obtained in either
country. It is understood that Attorney John-
son has approached the State Department at
Washington with a view of having negotiations
for copyright extension instituted with the
Canadian Government. Such negotiations would
require a long time to conclude, however, and
before they could be completed the new Cana-
dian copyright law will be in effect.
RIVIERA CO. TRAVELERS
Florence Tosch, general professional man-
ager of the Riviera Music Co., Chicago, 111., is
visiting some of the larger cities in the Middle
West. Miss Rhne Gill, the traveling representa-
tive of the firm, is on a trip through Eastern
territory. The company is making a special
drive at present on its success, ''Desertland,"
which is dedicated, by the way, to De Lye Alda,
of "Ziegfeld Follies."
The executive offices of Jack Mills, Inc., have
been moved to 233 West Fifty-fifth street. The
professional department of the company will re-
main at 152 West Forty-fifth street. Arthur
Hamburger is the new general manager of the
company.
