PITTSBURGH DEALERS PREPARING FOR SPRING TRADE
Clearance Sales Being Held to Make Room for New Stock—Appearance of Caruso the Leading
Musical Event of the Week—Mason & Hamlin Line in Great Demand—Other News
PITTSBURGH, PA., March 1.—The leading event
in music circles here the past week was the con-
cert given by Enrico Caruso, the noted tenor,
and his party last Saturday night at the Syria
Mosque, which was jammed with an enthusiastic
audience which manifested its pleasure by a
volume of applause that never seemed to cease.
The coming of Caruso to Pittsburgh was
made possible by the Standard Talking Ma-
chine Co., Victor distributors. The W. F. Fred-
erick Piano Co. furnished the Hardman concert
grand piano for the occasion.
Practically all of the leading piano houses
are having special clearance sales and from
statements made by the managers of the vari-
ous piano departments sales have been rather
flattering. E. B. Heyser, general manager of
the W. F. Frederick Piano Co., has announced
the "annual March pre-inventory sale" and de-
signated March in the big piano house as "a
month of musical bargains." A number of used
and second-hand pianos and player-pianos have
been overhauled and placed on the floor for
speedy sale. Manager William Woodward, Jr.,
of the piano department, stated that the sales
of Ampico reproducing pianos were keeping up
at a brisk rate and that a number of Ampico
sales were made to out-of-town residents the
past week. A special meeting of the directors
of the W. F. Frederick Piano Co. was held last
Friday, with W. F. Frederick presiding. Rou-
tine business was transacted.
"Our quarterly sale of used pianos was one
of the most successful we have ever had," said
L. H. Jacobi, Jr., the well-known manager of
the piano department of Kaufmann's (The Big
Store). Mr. Jacobi stated that sales on last
Saturday were very heavy and that several new
Stultz & Bauer and Mehlin pianos were dis-
posed of during the afternoon. Most of the
used pianos sold were known as "artist-used"
and brought good prices.
H. H. Fleer, manager of the piano depart-
ment of C. C. Mellor Co., indicated that the
February sales of used pianos was very satis-
factory. Special mention was made during the
past week in the newspapers of the Duo-Art
and the Krakauer piano.
The closing concerts by the Philadelphia Or-
chestra will be given at Syria Mosque on Fri-
day evening, March 19, and at the Nixon Thea-
tre Saturday afternoon, March 20. The pro-
gram will be Wagnerian without a soloist. Many
requests had been made for a Wagnerian pro-
gram.
At the piano department of Boggs & Buhl
Manager W. H. McConnell had a splendid offer-
ing of grands, uprights and players, as well as
electric reproducing pianos. The Boggs & Buhl
store is the exclusive representative of the H.
F. Miller, Poole, Janssen, Ludwig, Langdon,
Janssen Angelus and Artrio reproducing players.
At the S. Hamilton Co.'s main store on Lib-
erty avenue Burt Hengeveld, manager of piano
sales, reported trade as uniformly satisfactory.
He stated that the demand for Mason & Ham-
lin and Chickering pianos was very satisfac-
tory. The Hamilton Co. also has on sale the
well-known Meissner small grand piano, which
is on display in its show windows.
W. C. Dierks, treasurer of the C. C. Mellor
Co., has returned from a two weeks' visit to
Kentucky, where he enjoyed the horse exhibits.
George Schroeder, Jr., vice-president of the
Schroeder Piano Co., with his bride, is back
from their honeymoon trip and has resumed his
post at the store.
William Schroeder, secretary of the Schroe-
der Piano Co., who was seriously ill for some
weeks, is able to be out again. Mrs. Schroeder
was ill at the same time. Both suffered from
influenza.

The Central Intermediate High School
Chase uprights, followed by several repeat sales
to various institutions of learning, has again
placed two A. B. Chase parlor grands in two
of the largest high schools in the city. One of
these schools, the Central Intermediate High
School, is shown in the accompanying picture
and gives a good example of the beauty of the
Los Angeles schools. Each school has a large
auditorium where the pianos are in constant
use. Warren C. Whitney, president of the A.
B. Chase Piano Co., Inc., when seen at the New
York office, expressed himself as being very
much gratified at the record of the Bartlett
Music Co., for it showed that the A. B. Chase
pianos were giving complete satisfaction. For a
testimonial, nothing is as good as a repeat order.
