ers will buy any and every modern wood-work-
ing machine that will cut the cost of their pro-
duction, have modern factories, efficient cost
systems and good mechanics to manufacture
their products, but they very much neglect one
of the most important processes of piano
making, i. e., the dry kiln and the proper condi-

INVENTS MOUSE GUARD FOR PIANOS
WASHINGTON, D. C, June 10.—Silas D. Bell,
Childress, Tex., was last week granted Patent
No. 1,267,047 for a mouse guard for pianos.
The principal objects of the invention are first,
to provide, in a piano, a simple and efficient de-
vice for closing each slot or opening in the
front board of the piano in which slot or open-
ing a pedal normally reciprocates, and second,
to provide in conjunction with a pedal of the
piano, two substantially tubular standards each
secured on the front board of the piano adjacent
to a side of the pedal slot, and a plate sliding
in said standards under spring tension, the upper
edge of the plate resting under the pedal and the
body of the plate forming a closure for the slot
in said front board below the pedal when the
pedal is in elevated inoperative position.
