WHEN TO INSPECT GLUE WORK

later on.
We seem to be going through a sort of proc-
ess of modifying our drying philosophy as per-
taining to wood. There used to be a sort of
balance maintained around an indefinite ideal of
the right order of dryness for working wood.
It was thought that to get lumber or veneer
too dry was injurious, just as to leave it with
too much moisture.
Now, however, we seem
to be gradually settling down to the proposition
that thorough dryness is the thing, and that
there is not much need for argument that wood
can be made too dry. It probably can be made
too dry, but it is not likely to be, and the drying
philosophy to-day concerns itself mainly with
the matter of insuring thorough dryness and
of carrying on the process in such a manner
as to do no injury to the wood and leave it in
the best shape for working. We have devised
means for readily testing the dryness, and, gen-
erally speaking, the idea of the day is, the more
thorough the drying the better. Practically all
the argument in the philosophy of to-day has to
do with the details of the process of obtaining
an order of thorough dryness in the shortest
practical time and the most economical manner.

CRUDE RUBBER SHIPMENTS DROP
Consul George H. Pickerell, who is stationed
in Para, Brazil, reports that exports of crude
rubber from the Amazon district to the United
States for July amounted to 2,154,715 pounds,
compared with 2,910,315 pounds in the same
month a year ago. In July of this year there
were no exports to Europe, as compared with
1,667,760 pounds in July, 1916. The quantities
of fine and coarse rubber shipped to this coun-
try from Para were slightly in excess of ship-
ments from Manaos, but in the medium grades
shipments from Manaos far exceeded those
from Para.
This was also the case with
Cauchos.
