Tidd Music Publishing Co. to Be Represented
at Music Dealers' Convention
Finds Surprise in Syncopated Ballad Offered by
Country Girl—Will Publish It
The Tidd Music Publishing Co., Lancaster,
O., is at present offering eight very interesting
numbers to the trade. They include six songs
and two instrumental selections, the company
working with the dealer on a guaranteed propo-
sition in the matter of sales. The arrangement
is an original one and is worth learning about.
The Tidd Co. will have a representative at
the annual convention of the National Associa-
tion of Sheet Music Dealers in New York for
the purpose of exhibiting the company's line,
and explaining the trade proposition. The Tidd
numbers are well printed, have attractive title
pages and are altogether desirable.
In all the years of experience of Chas. H.
Harris as an author, composer and publisher, it
remained for a little country girl to give him
the surprise of his life when Miss Josephine E.
Vail, of Thompsonvillc, Conn., called on Mr.
Harris and asked him to hear some of her
efforts. After playing two numbers without
making an impression, the surprise came in the
form of a piece entitled "It's a Long, Long
Time Since I've Been Home," described as a
syncopated ballad and believed to be the first
of its kind. Mr. Harris claims when this song
is released that Miss Vail will become famous
over night and that Thompsonville, Conn., will
be put on the map.
M. Witmark & Sons have just signed a con-
tract with Lew Hirsch to publish his compo-
sitions for a term of years. The first of Mr.
Hirsch's works under the Witmark name will
be announced shortly.
Witmark & Sons also announced that they
have secured the American rights for the song
"There's a Long, Long Trail," of which over
one hundred thousand copies have been sold in
England. The words of the piece are by Stod-
dard and the music by Zo Elliott, two Ameri-
can college boys.

Business Session During Day to be Followed
by Annual Banquet in the Evening
The annual convention of the Music Pub-
lishers' Association of the United States will be
held at the Hotel Astor on June 13. The busi-
ness session will open at 10 a. m. and will con-
tinue through the afternoon with an intermis-
sion for an informal luncheon. The annual
banquet of the association will be held at the
same hotel in the evening and the official speak-
er will be announced later.
JACK HARDEN_A BENEDICT
Jack Harden, of the Chappell & Co. staff,
recent abandoned the path of single blessedness
to marry Miss Marjorie McCurdy. Mr. and
Mrs. Harden are now spending their honey-
moon on the New Jersey coast.

National Song in New Form Being Distributed
by Hinds, Hayden & Eldredge
The new musical arrangement of the national
song "America," written by District Superin-
tendent of Schools James J. McCabe, will be
distributed by Hinds, Hayden & Eldredge, who,
through a spirit of patriotism, have given their
services. This song is now being used and given
support by numerous patriotic organizations,
who seem to think it has filled a long-felt want
for a national air that can be easily sung and is
thoroughly American in its composition.
Word has been received from Giacomo Puc-
cini that he has begun work on his third opera
since the beginning of the war. The scenes of
the new work are laid in Italy in the fourteenth
century and it is expected that the piece will
have its premiere in America.
