Robert L. Paul, a young composer, of Balti-
more, Md., has just been elected a member of the
Manuscript Society of New York. The object of
this society is to advance musical composition
in America. Among its members are composers
whose names are known in Europe, as well as in
this country. To become a member one must
receive an invitation to submit a work in the
highest forms of composition. Mr. Paul sub-
mitted a trio for piano, violin and 'cello, which
received much praise.
Manager Charles Wilson, of Music Hall,
Gloucester, Mass., is a great believer in illus-
trated songs; in fact, he is a "crank" on the sub-
ject, insomuch that he will not permit any song
to be illustrated in his theater unless the slides
are perfect in every detail, and fit to be sung to a
refined audience. As an illustration of the style
of songs he prefers, he recently selected the fol-
lowing five Stern numbers: "In the Golden Au-
tumn Time, My Sweet Elaine," "Down Where the
Silv'ry Mohawk Flows," "The Plain Little Sol-
dier Man," "My Heart's To-Night in Tennessee"
and "When the Harvest Moon Is Shining on the

The big feature of M. M. Thiese's Burlesque
Co., "Wine, Women and Song," is the single work
of a charming little lady, Bonita, who is known
to the entire theatre-going public. This talented
young woman is probably the best exponent of
darkey songs on the American stage, and her
rendition of a number of this kind is always cer-
tain to make it a hit. Her latest offering to her
audience is William H. Penn's song, "I've Such
a Funny Feeling When I Look at You," which is
published by Sol Bloom.
With the thermometer near zero, it is an un-
usual thing to hear an audience go wild over a
song with the title of "You're Crazy With the
Heat." It is a fact, nevertheless, that The Priors
certainly warm them up while singing this song
at their engagements. The McLain sisters also
write that "Crazy With the Heat" is one of the
hottest ragtime shouts they have ever sung. The
music to this number is by A. B. Sloane, com-
poser of "The Mocking Bird," "Lady Teazle,"
and other productions; and it. is certainly very
catchy, while the words are irresistibly funny.
Stern & Co. say this is the best coon shout they
have struck since "Shame on You,"
