Bloom pointed out that th e $17.95 vendor
pays for itself in from one to two fillings.

Why Should I Join?
By Jerome Kaufman
Director In d ustry & Public: AHairs,
Na tion a l Ass~ . of Tobacco Distributors
Th ere are predominant reasons why a
businessman should belong to the trade
association representing his particular in·
dustry. The fa ct is-born e out by the for-
tunate and unfortun ate experi ences .of
('ountless numbers of men in business-that
from th e standpoint of his own selfish in-
terests, a man ca nnot afford to exclude
himself from membership in his industry's
trade association. Why is this so? H ere are
some of th e reasons:
1. Beca use hi s business is vitally affected
by powerful inAuences which no indi-
vidual company alone can hope to con-
trol.
2. Because no matter how efficient his own
management, his profit must be deter-
min ed to a great extent by the general
condition s existing within the industry_
3. Because he ' must surely prefer to oper-
ate on a bas is of mutual understanding,
helpfuln ess and fri endship.
4. Because membership makes possible th e
fra nk discussion and solution of com-
mon problems.
5. Because the alternative to associated ef-
fort in his industry is disorganiza~ion
resultin g in unso und competitive policies
and unfair practices.
6. Because no in dividual ca n operate with
profit and confidence in the future in an
industry which is so low in community
intelligence as to be un able to make
common ca use in th e common welfare.
7. Because th e cost of protecting and pro-
moting h is bus'ness is immeasurably
lower and the results immeasurably
greater if such activities are carried on
through one strong association.
S. Because an effective organization im-
proves th e fina ncial standing of an in-
dustry. In an individual it is a test of
character reAectin g his ability to get
alon g with oth ers. In an industry it is
a test of management intelligence.
9. Because every busi nessman who cooper-
ates to elimina te abuses in hi s ind ustry
is furthering the American tradition of
team-work, which alone has made possi-
ble th e eco nomi c progress of our nation.
