With the ending of inventory controls on
sugar August 30, this item will probably
cease to be news in connection with sup-
plies of merchandise for the vending ma-
chine trade. News relating to merchandise
will now shift to labor problems and to
costs that continue to rise.
Strong effort is being made to maintain
the five-cent price on merchandise that has
become established with the public at that
price, and this effort is in the face of costs
that keep on rising. Prices may again be-
come news before the year ends, just as in-
creased price tags on candy bars and soft
drinks made news early in the year.
Competition among brands shows a pros-
pect of becoming the chief news topic in
merchandise fields as the last quarter
begins. Brand competition is already top
news in the cigarette trade and reports in-
dicate the same is becoming true in the soft
drink field. Competition is beginning to
show up among brand names in candy bars
but the competition probably won't become
lively before late spring in 1948_ Manufac-
turers of candy bars are still too deep in
labor and production problems to put real
action into competitive seIling.
Third quarter financial reports on some
of the big producers of merchandise will be
available in October; stock market interest
still shows up chiefly in the soft drink field.

chandise items sold in vending machines

ASPIRIN
With big plans for the placing of a new
aspirin vendor under way, this drug item
takes its place after many years in the list
of merchandise products sold by vendors_
Backers of the new machine say there are
only five states having ancient laws that ban
sales in vendors. Current drug trade reports
show aspirin in plentiful supply and little
change in wholesale prices.
ALMONDS
Spot market prices on new crop almonds
were not available at this writing. Trade
interests estimated the new crop lower than
government reports had suggested_
CANDY BARS
Attention began to shift from present
sales to the time when increased production
will really show up. Manufacturers have
been planning for bigger output for some
months and a new story may be told by No-
vember. Several Chicago plants were ap-
pealing for help in the classified columns
early in the fall. Labor is still a problem
and chocolate now .. is the chief materials
problem. Costs continue to rise for manu-
facturers and have become so serious on
peanuts that a buyer's strike is openly dis-
cussed. General trend in the entire candy
field is toward big increase in dollar volume
and only slight poundage gains over previ-
ous months. Manufacturers of candy bars
welcome the prospect of the many cool
months ahead in which candy bar vendors
will need more candy. Extreme hot weather
during August cut down shipments of choc-
olate bars and wholesalers in some sections
reported running short on stocks.
APPLES
CHEWING GUM
Recent government reports indicated an
apple crop about five per cent below that of
Reports on third quarter business by the
major manufacturers not available for this
issue. Chicago manufacturers were taking
on additional employees early in September_
A current formula for chewing gum gives
some idea of the substitute chicle now
being used: 8 per cent pure cbicle base, 8
per cent substitute chicle, 1 per cent invert
sugar, 18 per cent glucose, and 65 per cent
powdered sugar and flavors.
CIGARS
Summary of summer reports showed Phil-
lies and White Owls as the well-known
leaders. Battle of the brands centers among
the old five-cent sellers, now in stores at
nine cents. The year 1920 still ranks as
peak cigar year when total consumption
nearly reached nine billion. Cigar trade
leaders are still trying to explain declines
that have taken place this year. Nation has
about 15 million cigar smokers.
CIGARE'ITES
Biggest news in the cigarette field is the
competition in brand sales. The number of
reporting agencies that check on cigarette
sales in different cities is increasing, and
now that 38 states tax cigarettes, many of
