ect is being worked out by Alkuno & Co.,
Inc., which has developed a compact penny
machine, holding 100 sticks of gum. Ma-
chines would be installed in fleets of cabs
operating in metropolitan areas.
Idea has been suggested before, but has
never gotten out of the drawing board stage.
A little over a year ago trade circles re-
ported that Yellow Cabs, Memphis, Tenn.,
was mulling over the plan, but nothing ma-
terialized. Appeal in the -plan has alway~
revolved around the operator's dream of
servicing all machines from one central lo-
cation, in this case the base garage.

Telecoin Offers to Install
"Launderettes" in Russia
NEW YORK-Telecoin Corp., national
distributors of Bendix coin·operated Laun·
derette machines, received good publicity
breaks on its story of offering its laundry
systems to the Russian government. News·
papers and also a number of trade journals
other than coin machine papers puhlished
the report.
Mel Adams, who handles publicity for
Telecoin, prepared the story and Arthur W.
Percival, president of Telecoin, authored
the letter to Russia.
Basis for the offer was publication of re-
ports in U. S. newspapers that a Soviet
newspaper had received and printed numer-
ous complaints from Moscow housewives,
charging that laundry service is slow-
sometimes taking a full month, that em-
ployees are discourteous to customers, and
that clothes, when finally returned to their
owners, are not clean. The laundry system
in Moscow had been using radio advertis-
ing to tell about its fine service, but many
housewives seemed to think the service was
not as advertised.
Percival, in his letter to a high Russian
official, 'e xplained the Launderette system in
the U. S., how about 1,200 stores now op-
erate in 45 states, and described in detail
the kind of service American housewives
get in these stores.
He said that Telecoin is "prepared to in-
stall Launderettes in Russia as promptly as
we have in this and other countries."
Reports have not been received yet as to
what reaction the offer caused in Russia.
Canned Juices for Vendors
PITTSBURGH-New interest was
aroused in the prospect for vending ma-
chines to sell juices when the H. J. Heinz
Co. here announced its plans to introduce a
new line of canned pure fruit juices tQ sell
at 10 and 15 cents per can.
Newspaper releases did not refer to vend-
ing machines but did suggest that the cans
would be sold in "those familiar iced pop
boxes."
When the Telecoin Corp. held its show-
ings of its new vendor for selling canned
fruit juices recently, it was reported that
one or more of the big juice canning firms
were deeply interested in the idea. (See
September AUTOMATIC VENDING.) Heinz of-
ficials say that the small cans will also he
suggested for drug stores and roadside res-
taurants.
Cans will be five and one· half ounce size
and will bear the familiar Heinz label. The
line will include apple, apricot, blended
orange and grapefruit, grape, grapefruit,
prune and tomato juices. The firm recom-
mends that the juices be chilled for serving.
