Tighten Meter Colledions
WASHINGTON, D. C.-Although th e
District of Columbia's 650 parking meters
have shown a profit in the period that
followed their installation in 1939, District
officials still feel they are not air·tight
enough. Auditor A. R. Pilkerton told com·
missioners that "there is no positive assur·
ance that all coins dropped into the meters
are deposited with the Collector of Taxes,
nor is there any means of definitely estab·
lishing this fact."

personnel so they may get a daily recording
of collections from each meter or group of
meters.
Since their installation, the meters have
provided a total of $182,386:91 in net in·
come and it is expected they will yield
$62,000 profit this year. An additional 400
meters are planned in the near future and
eventually it is hoped there will be 3,000 in
operation.
