ness.
Also returning soon is another veteran
operator, Lt. Francis T. Smith, now with
the Marines.
Many of the fellows are coming back,
and the operators are extending a cordial
welcome home to them all. The more the
merrier. Mississippi is a fertile field for
operators.

Coin machine operators of the Fort Worth
area continue to maintain an optimistic at·
titude, despite the fact that delivery of
new machines is still several weeks or
months away. Fall business is at about the
usual seasonal level, with some improve·
ment shown in vender operations and an
increased tempo for music machine oper·
ators. Unusually mild weather and a large
increase in football attendance on week.
ends has brougbt plenty of business for
vending machines. Shortages in merchan·
dise and equipment is all that prevents
venders from doing an all time peak vol·
ume. Business for local music men is ex·
cellent. Most phonograph operators report
recordings in better supply and they say
the quality of records has improved with
each new shipment. They al so report a
wider variety of artists are available for
recordings now being r eceived.
Although, both Army and Navy person·
nel are being reduced in the Fort Worth
trade area, business for arcades continues
at a high level. All arcade operators are
still looking for the anticipated new equip·
ment and are buying all the rebuilt equip·
ment they can find.
T. M. Carroll, owner of the Trinity Mu·
sic Co., says that b'usiness for his firm is
expanding. Opening of new spots and reo
furbishin g of older locations is providing
the firm with new business. He also reports
parts for coin machines and phonographs
are more plentiful.
The P anther Dist. Co. reports a nice in·
crease in the sale of r ecords. Their best
selling r ecordings for the past week in·
clude : Can't Begin to Tell You, a Bing
Crosby r ecord for Decca, and another Cros·
by recording, It's Been A Long, Long Time.
Other top selling records have been Too
Little, Too Late, a Capitol recording by
Woody Tuttle; Till The End of Time, by
Les Brown for Columbia ; It's Been So
Long, by Ernest Tubbs and Victor's Chick·
ery Chick by Sammy Kaye.
M. P. Johnson, local music man has just
installed a modern music system for Boyd's
Cafe.

a visitor to Dallas last week. J ack says

that announcement of the opening of his
West Texas branch offices will be made in
the next two weeks. In addition to record·
ings and music equipment, the new Ma·
loney branches will distribute a line of res·
taurant and hotel supplies.
The Fort Worth coin machine trade is
most vitally interested in the now pressing
problems of reconversion and employment.
While closing of most of the Consolidated·
Vultee airplane plant has caused consider·
able unemployment, it is believed that a
sane and sensible plan for labor and man·
agement to get together and work out a
general plan for future industrial develop·
ment is an urgent local need. The recent
strike of drivers of the Greyhound bus
lines that has tied up travel over that
Southwest system is pOInted to by local
coin machine authorities as a concrete ex·
ample for the need of a get·together by
local labor and management representa·
tives.
In the meantime, several million dollars
worth of local building and other improve·
ments are practically at a standstill. This
building program and other contemplated
industrial expansions can supply the main·
spring for a real era of prosperity, if the
problems of labor and industry can be
quickly and sanely solved. The Fort Worth
coin machine industry is ready to back a
workable plan that will help to keep the
wheels of progress turning.

SPRINGFIELD, Dl.- This city challen·
ges others to show a more pregnant interest
in automatic phonograph music. With a
population of around 72,000 persons, M. M.
Smith, city license clerk, reveals there is
an automatic phonograph for every 390
citizens. Figures were taken from li·
censes issued.

her beseeching eyes in which faint hope

her breath came in short, wrenching gasps.
