Curfew Hits Operators
Williams Gets War Job
Bad Calif. Bill
CHICAGO- In compliance with th e
orders of the Director of War Mobilization
a nd Reconversion James F. Byrnes, the
hundreds of thousands of electrically op·
erated amusement machines throughout th e
nation fell under curfew regulations on
F ebruary 26th. Least hit by the order
were various types of ve nding and service
devices, but such machin es as automati c
phonographs, bowling games, movie rn a·
chi'nes and pin ball machin es were included
in tbe midn ight curfew r egulations.
First r eports from key cities indicated
that th e operators stood to lose a con-
siderable sli ce of the bonanza grosses
chalked up in the past wa r months but
two weeks later the picture started to
change. It was apparent that the popula-
tion was adju sting itself to the new scheme
of things and p atron age of devices started
on the upward swing again , and the be·
li ef is h eld that th e coin ma chin e oper·
a tors will barely feel th e monetary effects
of the curfew in anothe r two weeks. At
least, this is the optimistic opinion of som e.
of th e larger ope rators in sca ttered key
cities.
H owever, it stands to reason that som e
noticeable losses will be in evidence on
top spots where automatic phonogra phs
and amusement machin es get a normal
around -th e-clo ck play. Th e curfew ca nnot
help but clip a certain percenta ge of ea rn-
ings from th ese devi ces.
Compliance of operators has been al-
most perfect and various associations have
notified all memb ers to see that all equip -
ment is si lenced or di sconnected promptly
at midnight regardless of the statu s of th e
loca tion and its ability to remain open all
ni ght under certain curfew exceptions.
CHICAGO- The fifth major contract for
communica tions equipment in the past 16
month s was awarded the Will iams Ma nu -
fa cturing Co. the fi rst week of March, ac-
cording to an announcement by H a rry Wil·
Ii ams, president, and Al Silberman, head of
th e firm's radar and war production di -
vi sion.
The con tract calls for radar a nd com-
munications equipment for th e U. S. Signal
Corps and the Navy, and the firm is tool-
in g up now to meet an early dea dlin e
.
for initial shipm ents.
SACRAMENTO- Assemblyman Ki lpat-
ri ck, Los An geles, has introduced Assem·
bly Bill 1982 wh ich would add a section
to the Alcoholic Beverage Con trol Act, to
r ead : "No li censee shall conduct, or allow
to be conducted, upon hi s premises ' any
gam e of chance. Th e board shall forfeit
the license of every licensee who vi olates
the provisions of this section."
Passage would permit the Boa rd of
Equalization , as th e enforcement agency,
to decide wh at is, and what is not a game
of chance a nd virtually control the oper-
ation of . all types of amusement devices in
establ ish ments dispensing drinks.
Bill has bee n r eferred to Committee on
Public Morals.

WASHINGTON- Before the House Ap-
propriations Committee on March 13th,
Assistant Attorn ey General Wendell Berge,

partment of Justi ce, charged that an "ever-
lasting match" operated on th e principl e

by the mat.ch monopoly. "It wou ld be
ca pable of a n umber of strikes," reported
Berge. "Th ey have held pa tents on that
for som e years and kept it off th e market."
(EDITOR'S NOTE : Following the first
news story con cernin g the 1,000 strike

and put up substa ntial amounts to sew up
certain territori es. At th at time . TH E
