What'~Ahead-And How io

HIS is a truly difficult subject to talk
T about
in these times. Even a Fortune
Teller would hesitate to predict what lies
ahead in the Coin Machine Industry or al-
most any other Industry.
Just a few short months ago every kind
of coin-operated. game could be ' had f.or
the asking, but with Government restnc-
tions,regulations, and "freezing" there is
actually a ' dearth in ·this type of merchan-
dise today. Most'bf. us' know where all these
machines went. Far-sighted businessmen in
this field bought what they could for fu-
ture ' sale, for repairing, for reconditioning
and for salvaging parts in broken·down
equipment.
.
Nobody knows better than we who ' are
in the coin·opdated machine business . that
we have ·to husband our resources of essen-
tial parts and tubes, eliminate carelessness,
keep our machines in good working order,
look for .and cultivate our sources of sup-
ply, for no new parts or mac?ines are to
be mantifacturedfor the duratIOn.
"One ·.thing that is not only ahead of us
but with us right now is the scarcity of
manpower. Iri one way it helps the Indus-
try insofar as.i·the phonograph operator is
concerned. Fewer and fewer musicians are
available and music-lovers must rely more
and m'o re on recorded music for their en-
tertainment. It would really be a promising
field for the operator of music but-and
there is a big "BUT"-how and where to
get these desirable phonographs, where to
get the records, and where to get the re-
placements such as parts and tubes.
We will have to economize and salvage
parts and tubes which a short time ago
would have been laid aside or discarded.
Surely we are being taught in the hard
school of necessity, just how to save and
conserve.
We at ChiCago Novelty have been in the
operating business a long time and have
learned a few lessons. From being operators
we went on along to the wholesale recondi-
tioning and supplying business. Wholesale
is somewhat of a broad word to use in these

tiines Hlld we soon realized that large
volume was out of the question. We, like
other industries felt the curtailment the
war placed upo~ us. The spectre of scarcity
is forever hovering about us. But careful
planning and research in many direction:,
and adapting ourselves to changed condI-
tions is our motto and the word " quantity"
has become obsolete with us for the dura-
tion, and we have instead substituted the
word "quality."
Another result of our planning and re-
search is the conversion of coin-operated
Ray Guns and through untiring efforts we
have now reached a point where we can
specialize in the conversion of the old
Seeburg Chicken Sam and the Convict and
Chutes into a game that has already found
a country-wide acclaim. These are convert-
ed into a "ShQot the Jap" unit and have
been immensely popular_
In other ways too we are endeavoring to
serve operators today in helping them ob-
tain the tubes so necessary in the operation
of phonographs and guns. We all know
that an idle machine means loss of income .
and loss of income means less War Bonds.
It used. . to be an old and very true say-
ing "not to lay all the eggs in' one basket." ·
But here again the war and grim necessity '
have brought about a change. No longer
can the operator afford to travel miles upon
miles to service wide·spread locations. Gas
rationing put a stop to this. The wise op-
erator has learned to put "ALL his eggs
in ONE · basket." That i's to say into :bas-
kets close together. He is also much more
choosey about locations.
Another evidence of putting "ALL his
eggs in ONE basket" . is the increasing ap·
pearance of Arcades: Their popularity is
already well established. Here in the Ar-
cade. can be found a great variety of equip-
ment and a n.e~er ending assortment
vices to capture the attention and p.
age of the customers. Variety is the ,
of life and in the Arcade of today ther
plenty of "spice."
But "laying all the./ ggs in one baske
does not mean that the opera tor has to bt
come a "one-track-minded" individual. On
the contrary, the more diversified his un-
dertakings are, the better. In order to be
successful he must branch out-but of
course within his own field.
We too have adopted the policy of di-
versification but only within our own
sphere of activity, hence our service of
conversions, parts, tubes, etc. But we are
not standing still. We are forever thinking
of new services and weighing new ideas.
Another example of how everything has
changed in these unusual times is the past
midnight dances now in vogue everywhere.
Who would have thought of going to a
dance at 3 o'clock in the morning a few
months ago, but such is the case today.
War-workers off shift at midnight seek
recreation and early morning dances,
movies and the like are the answer.
What was looked upon as ridiculous yes-
terday may be the vogue tomorrow. This
is food for thought for every wide-awake
and progressive operator - "oil up your
old thinking machine and plan ahead."
Careful planning, husbanding our resources
and supplies-will see us through.
