NEW YORK-Eli Oberstein and his Hit
Rec.ords have sc.ored an.other vict.ory .over
Petrill.o's attempts t.o bl.ock the rec.ording .of
p.opular numbers .on Hit Rec.ords and Ober-
stein has declared "we'll c.ontinue .offering
the public rec.ordings .of current tunes in
regular releases and Petrill.o can't st.op it!"
Oberstein's life hasn't exactly been a bed
.of r.oses since the Petrill.o ban went int.o
effect last year. Paying nQ attenti.on what-
s.oever t.o . .orders from the Uni.on prexy
Oberstein has c.ontinued the release .of cur-
rently p.opular n\lmbers in defiance .of Pe-
trill.o and with.out divulging where .or h.ow
the rec.ordings are made. Several times the
New Y.ork L.ocal has had Oberstein .on the
carpet f.or questi.oning but he has stead-
fastly refused t.o divulge any inf.ormati.on
c.oncerning his business.
Latest eff.ort .of Petrill.o tQ bl.ock Ober-
stein and what he refers t.o as "b.o.otleg
discs" was t.o ask the music publishers f.or
their c.o-.operati.on by declining tQ permit
Oberstein t.o rec.ord their numbers. Reply
t.o PetrillQ came thr.ough the Music . Pub-
lishers' Pr.otective Ass.ociati.on inf.orming
him that they were p.owerless t.o refuse per-
missiQn t.o Oberstein t.o rec.ord their tunes.
With this new Vict.ory "in the bag" Ober-
stein has declared that Hit Rec.ords will
c.ontinue in full f.orce and at least 150,000
pressings will be made .of each new re-
lease. Even th.ough .orders f.or each new
Williams Joins Clark
SAN FRANCISCO-Ann.ouncement has
been made here .of the app.ointment .of
Ge.orge Williams as sales representative for

Aubrey Stemler getting acquainted with
the Qperal.ors.
Pri.or t.o j.oining D.on Clark, Williams was

rec.ording t.otal many mQre than this num-
ber, it is Oberstein's plan t.o supply .only
th.ose cust.omers visiting his regular retail
.outlets and requesting rec.ordings .of the
newest numbers. By intelligent all.otment .of
rec.ords he feels he will have an .organiza-
ti.on and reputati.on developed by the time
the war is .over that will step up and take
its place al.ong with the Big 3 recQrd CQm-
panies.
Gutshall Sharpens Needles
LOS ANGELES-The .offices .of lack
Gutshall Distributing C.o_ have been .offi-
cially designated a receiving depot f.or re-
sharpening and replating used ph.on.ograph
needles and the business g.ot .off tQ a nice
start with hundreds .of needles turned in
f.or attenti.on.
Gutshall sends the needles .on t.o Chi-
cag.o where they are refinished and re-
sharpened .on fact.ory precisi.on equipment
used f.or the manufacture .of new needles_
The needles are returned carded and re-
sembling in b.oth appearance and perf.orm-
ance, brand new needles.
"Resp.onse has been gQ.od t.o .our initial
annQuncement .on this new service," re-
vealed Gutshall. "We feel this is a service
that every music .operat.or will eventually
need and the smart .ones are turning in
their .old needles nQW s.o they can be re-
sharpened and be read'y in case .of any
emergency.
Music Aids Production
LOS ANGELES-The use .of music in in-
dustrial plants t.o increase pr.oductiQn and
t.o cut d.own absenteeism is meeting with
marked success thr.ough.out the c.ountry,
acc.ording t.o data c.ompiled by the Pa-
cific N etw.ork, Inc., L.os Angeles representa-
tive .of the Muzak C.orp.orati.on, specialists,'
in the installati.on .of industrial music
equipment.
C.ontrQlled experiments c.onducted by
techn.ol.ogical institutes sh.ow the f.oll.ow-
ing .outstanding results: Unit .output per
empl.oye in m.ore than 75 .per cent .of the
fact.ories ch.osen f.or study increased 6.25
per cent, .on the average, after start .of in-
dustrial music pr.ograms.
T.otal productiQn per 100 man h.ours jn
tw.o typical weeks jumped 11.4 per cent
in the week .of music playing as c-.ompared
with the week withQut musical acc.ompani-
ment.
.
In .one case where a high degree .of
manual dexterity and sense .of timing were
requi'r ed, pr.oducti.on increased 4.07 per cent
after intr.oducti.on .of industrial music.
M.onday absenteeism was sharply reduced
and early departures fr.om plants were al-
m.ost eliminated.
A recent study .of this new trend in pr.o-
ductiQn management made by Har.old Bur-
ris-Meyer .of the Stevens Institute .of Tech-
n.ol.ogy said: "Whether we like it .or n.ot,
music in industry appears tQ he here tQ
stay and hids fair t.o be .of increasing im-
p.ortance as time g.oes .on."
