Miniature Arcades Prove Profitable
by Peter Hagedoorn
of Jersey Specialty Co.
Singac, New Jersey
HE present war has wr.ought many
T changes
in the meth.od .of .operating f.or
m.ost .operat.ors in the c.ountry but th.ose
.of us in the East have probably made
moOre changes than any .others because .of
the drastic sh.ortages .of gas, tires, man·
p.ower, etc., in this area. In the days be·
f.ore the war .our .operati.ons were widely
scattered while t.oday the .operat.or making
moOney has his equipment c.oncentrated in
as small an area as p.ossible.
When it became necessary f.or us toO coOn·
solidate .our .operati.ons in as cl.osely knit
r.outes as p.ossible we hit up.on the idea .of
d.oubling up in the l.ocati.ons we were toO
use and endeav.or toO make each .of them
a miniature Arcade. We eliminated a large
number .of .our p.o.orer l.ocati.ons and in the
better type sp.o ts we have installed moOre
machines. Where f.ormerly we had .one
marble table we n.ow have, f.or example, a
r.oll d.own game such as Play Ball .or G.o.ofy
G.olf, tw.o .or moOre guns such as Jap CoOn·
versi.ons, Air Raider, Anti·Aircraft .or Rapid
Fire; and a b.owling game such as the Ten
Strike, Bally Alley .or Skee Ball.

Of c.ourse the installati.on .of so many
pieces is n.ot always p.o~sib l e but we in·
stall just as many as the l.ocati.on has r.o.om
f.or and switch the machines fr.om time toO
time toO keep up interest and the cash b.oxes
full. We find the idea highly pr.ofitable f.or
it gives patroOns a variety · .of equipment toO
enj.oy and in the case .of a service call we
have the l.ocati.on mark the machine ".out
.of .order" until there are moOre than the
.one call toO be made in the neighb.orh.o.od .
T his saves us time, gas and tires and the
cust.omers d.o n.ot .object f.or there are plenty
.of .other machines toO claim their attenti.on
even if .one .or tw.o are .out .of .order f.or a
day .or s.o.
Where we f.ormerly had fifty sp.ots in n.or·
mal times taking in ab.out $400 a week,
we n.ow have the same number .of mao
chines bunched in ab.out 15 sp.ots and we
are taking in ab.out 50% .of what we did
in n.ormal times. We have practically n.o
service calls at all and we feel that this is
the .only pr.ofitable way t.o .operate t.oday.
F.oll.owing .our meth.od y.ou have less than
.one· third the st.ops t.o take care .of, y.ou
need .only .one truck toO take care .of these
games where previ.ously y.ou needed tw.o,
and y.ou have less help. Y.ou are n.ot c.on·
stantly changing games as the st.ops are in·
f.ormed that there are n.o .other games avail·
able and n.o new .ones being manufactured
s.o they bec.ome c.ontent t.o get al.ong with
th.ose they have and let whatever shifting
we might c.onsider necessary fr.om time t.o
time, entirely up to us.
Then t.o.o y.ou can c.ombine y.our .once·a·
week c.ollecti.ons with y.our service calls
and y.ou'll find, as we did, that 15 stoOps
are a l.ot less headache than 50.
T.o summarize: gr.oup y.our equipment in
miniature arcade Dr play r.o.om fashi.on ,
eliminate the p.o.or st.ops, d.ouble up .on the
best sp.ots. Keep y.our equipment clean and
in g.o.od w.orking c.onditi.on at all times and
y.ou'll find y.ou take in ab.out 50% .of what
y.ou did in n.ormal times, but y.ou will make
m.ore than 50% because y.ou d.o n.ot have
new equipment t.o purchase and y.our .over·
head is half .of what it previ.ously was. In·
stead .of depreciating, y.our equipment is
bec.oming m.ore valuable and the .operat.or
with $5,000 w.orth .of equipment at the
time .of Pearl Harb.or will find it w.orth
twice as much t.oday. What's m.ore, it will
be w.orth three Dr f.our times as much if
the war c.ontinues f.or tw.o Dr three m.ore
years.
