tically amount to ladies' confab. Which
reminds us-Ladies take a hint on the fem-
inine technique in the business from Babe
Kaufman. She raised stalwart sons and
built a wonderful business at the same
time and can give the distaff sides many
points.
Use of war stamps and recruiting post-
ers on or near machines is considered good
form today. Many civilian defense units
need operators to spread the gospel. They
also require help from the machine for
notices, etc. By contacting your neighbor-
hood sector warden, you'll help your com-
munity to help itself and your services will
be appreciated.
Boys in service: Harry Gurfien, Lew Mar-
tin, Harry Weiss, Joe "Buster" Samson,
Morris Gold, Irving Skaletsky, Abe Fisher.
Best wishes to all and drop us a card with
notes about experiences.

to lose excessive weight . . . Harry CohI)

ing out of a tenth story window to get the
feel . . . Almost fainted . . . Bill Peek

says his voice is too low for a sergeant ...
Jack Hanley expected to be called soon,
taking his last leave of gay ties and socks
. . . Yours truly eyeing recruiting posters
and being scared by a burly corporal . . .
Wives and more wives applying at the asso-
ciation and some pretty enough for sweet

Amalgamated, losing weight, in worrying
about the boys . . . Lou Goldberg re-
gretting his age, but remembering he has
eligible youngsters.
National defense units sent in a hurried
call last May for mechanics in the trade.
Aircraft production and tank manufa~tiirers
state mechanics proficient in coin machine
field make best producers on'icomplicaled
machinery used in war production, Word
is that many operators qualify 'a nd will

probably be out' for ,tHe duration.
Demand for coin machines will be greater
after than before the war, ' 'according to
WPB. Board maintains many machines will
have permanently replaced personriel" 'and
new ideas to be produce-d' in peace time will
see the use of coin machines am plified to
an extent that operators today do not even
drea_m, Whole retail outlets and big stores
will be given over to coin machine merchan-
dising. Army of mechanics' and individual
operators will replace many middlemen of
today.
Next best news: Voted the favorite re-
laxation of soldiers in camps, the old re-
liable phonograph. 'Next in line, ray guns,
skill games, then vendors. States report:
"Soldiers prefer the tunes that can be had
on the music boxes , to more pretentious
music, an~, crowd all resorts featuring these
machmes.
Flash from New York's Fire Commis-
sioner: "Coin machine operators are de-
sired to serve as plane and fire spotters.
These men are accustomed to make the
rounds of the Metropolitan district at all
hours, know it thoroughly and can be re-
lied upon to render quick and efficient serv-
ice in emergencies. Apply to your local fire
station or see your nearest police precinct
for further information.

Liquor Without Eats Nixed
LOS ANGELES.-The California Suo
preme COurt has ruled that only hotels,
restaurants and cafes so conducting their
businesses that the serving of meals consti-
tute the principal part of the business may
strve intoxicating liquors and then only
incidental, thereto ,
, Rilling came when the Court denied the
Southern California Tavern Association's
petition for hearing in the case of Ham-
mond vs. McDonald. The Court defines a
bona fide restaurant in the following man-
ner:
"A restaurant which is kept and operated I
for the purpose of furnishing meals to the
public for service of intoxi'cating liquors
therein being merely incidental to that
tusiness, is what it purports to be, and is
therefore a bona fide restaurant, and may
as a casual an'd incidental part of its
business sell such liquors and allow their
consumvtion upon the premises, even with-
out meals. But where the principal busi-
ness of the restaurant becomes the sale
and service of intoxicating liquors, which
are consumed on the premises, with th ~
sale and service of meals the incidental
matter, or 'side line,' such place is no
longer a bona fide restaurant, but is to be
regarded as a public saloon or barroom
within the intent of the Constituti'o nal pro-
visions, and the sale 9f such liquors therein
lire prohibited."
