dom come from th e pointed typewriter of
sin cere, thinkin g LeRoy Stein, manager of
the Coi n Machin e Industri es Joint Counci l
of New J ersey in th e Thanksgiving issue
of "Th e Coun cil way," this time on the
matter of trad e associa tion s. Writes Stein:
" How many business men really appreci-
ate th e value of th eir trade associations and
th e broad benefits to th e industry it repre-
sents. Whil e it is presumed to be efficientl v
organized and well run, it is not alway~
properly a pprec iated because th e non-
memb er does not kn ow the kind of work
the association performs. But should any
associa tion disband it would not be very
long before th e entire industry would be
adversely affected. The mere existence of a
trade association is evidence that the out-
standin g leaders in th e trade are earnestly
engage d in a coopera tive effort to insure
a much more prosperous condition of
affairs than would be the case if such an
organization did not ex ist.
" It is unfortuna te that th ere are always
a few perso ns in every industry who are
co ntent to let th eir more unselfi sh fellow-
operator stand the burden, hut who n ever-
th eless share in th e benefits derived from
assoc iation effort . Th ese men who express
their doubt of receiving a definite return
in tan gibl e benefits a re apparently oblivious
to th e tremendous benefits they a re con-
sta ntl y receivin g a nd yet are unwillin g to
stand th ei r share of th e burden.
