NEW YORK - Are we getting results?
You bet we are, said New York coinmen
as the cops closed in and nabbed one of the
niftiest slug sources in years. A gang of
five, all with an eye on easy money, were
caught red·handed making nickel cheaters.
Arraigned before Federal Judge John W.
Clency, they asked for counsel; but reliable
sources assert the government really has the
goods on this outfit.
Local outlets receiving a little shock in
the close·up of the Mechanical Mfg. Corp.,
at 245 Fifth Avenue may want the low·
down. The petition to organize, we have
learned, was on a voluntary basis. Court
records disclose that Mechanical listed lia·
bilities, exclusive of capital stock at
$44,536, assets at $63,786. What this com-
pany needs is a little time; if it gets it, it
will be in there pitching again.

Re: that court test in Queens County
which · seems to be distressing the trade-
it must be kept in mind that these have
been going on for years. The premise that
the mere possession of a game is, ipso facto,
a violation of the law, sounds quite jarring,
but that the higher courts will sustain such
a brief remains to be seen. Deferred until
March 16, we will see then what the Appel-
late Division has to say about this test case.
.A.re we on the right track? Movie ma-
chines are hitting their stride, but what
about subject matter? All right, so kid dies
won't go near theIR! But there are a lot of
children hidden in most of us and such
subjects as The Turkish Jerk flashed on the
screen simply dives back to the odorous
days of the side-alley arcades. The industry
has enough to worry about without getting '
the public aroused on this point. Why can't
it be kept clean and make money, too?
Unless the movie people can answer this
they'll be sorry, so help us .
Congrats are due Willie Levey, Lucky
Skolnick and Hymie Budin in the forma-
tion of the Budco Co. which is hot-footing
the trade with some bright surprises. Budin
has been around the coin machine business
long enough to sleep it. Lucky Skolnick
can always call 'em, and as for Willie Le-
vey, put him down in your little blue book
as the bright boy who has master-minded
more than one good route.
Note to the vendor crowd: Have you seen
those nifty peanut vendors in the subway?
Bright and sparkling and humming fairly
constantly. It begins to look as if the mer-
chandisers are really coming into their own.
Like everything else, the machines move in
cycles. A few years back the vendors were
on the skids, today you bang your shins
against them. It's all in the cards. Man-
power is' diminishing; designers are slant-
ing towards greater eye-appeal. Moreover,
priorities tend to em phasize the essential
industries only.
The reconditioning trade keeps ringing
the bell. Now it's Dave Robbins; he's been
unloading cigarette vendors in fair quan-
tities and claims there's a real demand for
these machines. From Acme Sales we hear
that this firm is expanding and will soon
be represented in Venezuela as well as other
South American markets.
Bob (Gentleman Bob) Hawthorne of Du
Grenier has additional competition these
days. Known as one of the few aviators in
the business, Bob must now admit to the
lone eagle company, Sandy Warner who
bats 'em out for Seaboard Sales. Sandy has
just gained his pilot's license and already

a blood-curdling defy has been hurled along
"The Row." Sandy has challenged Bob to
the double barrel, the Immelman roll, and
what have you? We're dizzy already.
Well, they keep on doing it, despite what
we married guys tell 'em. Latest victim was
Bernie Beder of Mike Munves. Beder, who
has never done. anyone any harm and al-
ways had a nice word for the boys, walked
the plank under the orders of Miss Muriel
Kass. But Beder took it like a man and last
word from the honeymooners' camp is that
the benedict is bearing up well, considering.
Have you heard the latest? They're form-
ing a bowling team among the operators
and want the wives to do the same. Coin-
men have asked us to pass the word along.

Irving Somers, Joe Beck, Robert Simon, Al
Lovejoy, "Doc" Wiston and others were
vacation bound. Some of the boys plan to
visit in Chicago and won't be back in town
until the end of January.
This town's het up about the impending
Chicago get-together at the Hotel Sherman.
This year some of the wives are coming
along, too. Inquiring "how come?" among
the trade we were told that many of the
smarter operators feel that machines should
appeal to women as well as men. They want
the ladies to give the works the glad-eye
and then report on their conclusions. If
wifie thinks it has the goods, friend. hus·
band will come across on the dotted line.
Is this a gag? Not if you talk to those in
the know who will tell you that behind not
