COIN
MACHINE
REVIEW
dripping with spaghetti and chianti ac-
cent told me how much I weighed, and
at the same time a ticket dropped into
the cup. The voice I understood-in the
same manner most coin machine men
would understand. The ticket-well, I
understood it, too, but I am still w on-
dering just how much 82 kilos are,
" ship side"-or would you say "bed-
side," meaning "stripped for gym"?-
and then again, who in heck is Jim?
I spent yesterday in Livorno (Leghorn,
to you) and though it is a city of 60,000
inhabitants, and its neighboring city of
Pisa-where the tower leaned for me-
has 35,000 more people, I failed to see so
much as a single coin machine or scale
in either community, and all this com-
pared to the hundreds of machines in
Naples and Genoa.
And that, again, folks , is my story
Take it for what it's worth. Yourn till
coin machines are everywhere,

ABOARD THE ss EXCALIBAR, Out of
GENOA, ITALY. (RC)-The story of coin
operated scales dates back a long way
in America. My memory recalls the old-
time Toledo Jockey scale, and later the
small type; then came those with for-
tunes on dials, followed by the " Give
yourself a weigh, free " idea, and the
scales with printed tickets and fortunes
on the back.
It remained, however, for the British
to come out with a talking scale which
has yet to invade Western America,
which , as a novelty, would make Ameri-
can scale operators sit up and take
notice.
Yet , in my wanderings , I have dis-
covered something even farther along.
The Italians have combined both the
ticket and the talking model into a sin-
gle scale which I discovered in Genoa.
I put 20 c-no, that is not twenty cents
in our money but twenty centimos in
Italian money, and twenty centimos is a
fifth part of a Lira, the "dollar" of the
Italians, and a Lira is worth a nickel in
good old American money.
Well , anyhow , I put tw'e nty centimo s
in the coin chute and a voice, heavily
