OCTOBER MEETING
T
IE O ctober meeting was one of those
off meetings. Of co urse we anticipated
it, as in these fo rty-e ight states of the Union
once every four years we elect a skipper
who pil ots th e ship of state as a united
gove rnment for no good reason at all ( as I
see it). These electi on yea rs , one o ut of
every four, are off years, so we as operators
mu st keep in step with th e rest of th e fo lks
by having our meetings off a litt le-anJ
how'
Th e president was " making big ones out
of litt le ones" at the Elks' Circus at Hunt-
ington Park every nig ht at 7: 30 o' cl ock, and
he hoped that this nig ht's mee ting co uld get
under way at 6: 30 so he co uld turn th e
meeting over to th e vice-president about 8
o' clock and be on ly an ho ur late in getting
. Most every-
to the Circus, but no I uck
one came stro lling in about 7: 30 for thi s
6: 30 dinner meeting. Say, yo u Bozos ' It
was th e intent of those who set a 6: 30
mee ting tim e to fix it so th at we could
transact what busin ess we had by aro und 8
o' clock and then go elsew here for other eve-
n ing activiti es . If yo u, as members, are not
in acco rd with th at meeting time, let's get
togeth er on thi s sco re, as it is not fa ir to
those who come at 6: 30 to have to wait
until after 7:3 0 befor e getting down to
busin ess.
As I was say ing, it was an off meeting.
The president was leav ing at 7:45, headed
for th e Circus to try and gather in a few
shekels when most of you fell ows were just
arriving for this 6: 30 dinner meeting. The
secretary, Phi l Eisendrath, phoned in th at he
was at the hospita l and was the father of a
new-born son , but he wou ld come down if
it was necessa ry. My answer was, " Thank s,
Phi l, for ca ll ing. Skip the meeting. Con-
gratu lations, Phil." The vice-president, S. C.
Kingsbury, was repo rted sick in bed. "Scot-
ty," the treasurer, arrived at 7: 30, however.
Perhaps the dope I have is cor rect. I am
told that Scotty alw ays shaves in the eve-
ning just before dinner , and this night he
started to shave in plenty of time to get to
the meeting prompt ly. H oweve r, as he was
shaving, before he rea lized it he had ta lked
himself into a haircut and a shampoo.
Our always-on-tim e, always-faithfu l as-
sistant treas urer, W. H . McKin lock, was
"J o hnni e on the spot" at 6: 30 . Th anks a
lot, Mac. And as to o ur member Straw
and hi s New Year' s attendance reso lution,
he is doing very nicely. On ly one mi ss this
year. The president so rt of put last year's
vice-president, Bud Wi se, on the spo t, fir st
asking him to pinch hit for Phi l as secre-
tary nro tern, then turning the meeting over
to him to act as chairman as I drifted away
to the Circus to try to make a few sheke ls.
A new petition asking for the repea l of
the $ I per mac hin e per year Los Angeles
Vending Machine Law , and the p lacing of
vending machin e operators' businesses un-
der the $4 blanket business law, has been
draw n up and fi led with the Los Angeles
City Counci l.
Th e door pri ze for the November 23
meeting will be a 50-pound box of cand t-
coated nuts , donated by Mr. Gi lker of the
Los Ange les Pan Confection Co. Thanks a
lot, Mr. Gi lker.
Strange as it may seem, if times keep
getting better, there may yet be a customer
fo r every vendi ng machine.
Say, fell ows, November has five Mon-
days. Our meeting is on th e fourth Mon-
day, November 23, and not the last Mon -
day. W e' ll be seeing you at Clifton's, 648
South Broadway, Littl e Brown Roo m, sec-
ond floor , Nove mber 23, at 6 :30 p. m.
LEW B. B U ETER,
President .
Gir l Friend : " l g uess yo u' ve had lots
of chances to get marri ed."
