the coin operated ma
chine industry has been
beset by many problems so com
mon to its particular method of
operation. It has always been
that way. The industry has over
come many obstacles during the
stages of its survival.
Each
time, due to the cooperation and
loyalty of its members, it has
emerged stronger and more co
hesive than formerly. There is
a brotherhood and kinship which
grows out of fighting for a com
mon cause, which tends to solid
ify the unity of its ranks. Hav
ing been with the industry since
its pioneer days, I have observed
the many forward steps which
the coin machine business has
made in meeting and overcoming
the many problems which it has
faced.
try, and cooperation will require
effort, many will be inclined to
shirk their burden of work and
effort, expecting that some other
person will go ahead and do
their part for them. That is
always a possibility where the
human element is concerned;
somebody or other will shirk
their part and “lay down.” They
want to be included in on the
rewards which may accrue, but
they do not want to add their
efforts to the struggle which will
attain those rewards.

stick which is continually hover
ing over our heads. In some sec
tions of the country conditions
are much worse than others, but
there is no question about condi
tions assuming a very serious at
titude.

What the industry needs to
day, probably more than ever,
is the cooperation of each and
every person associated with it.
We must pull together as team
mates in the future, even more
so than in the past few years.
A strong, solid organization, co
hesive to the highest possible
degree, is needed to carry on
against the many attacks which
are being launched against us on
many sectors. With unity and
organization in our own ranks
we will overcome whatever op
position we may meet.
Today, the industry is faced
by some of the most serious
problems with which it has ever
been confronted. In many parts
of the country adverse legisla
tion has been directed toward it,
which unless it is abated in some
manner will cause irreparable
harm to ensue. Day by day we
receive reports where pressure
is being brought to bear upon
the industry in some localities,
by local officials. In some in
stances it is a stage play for
political recognition, sometimes
it is an act which is performed
to appease certain people or fac
tions. Regardless of the manner,
or type of opposition, it is a big

From the manufacturer to the
operator, everybody associated
with the industry has a definite
responsibility to the other fellow
who is helping to “ carry on.”
It is no longer the fight of any
one faction, for as one benefits
or suffers, we all benefit or suf
fer.
No matter how inconse
quential we rate ourselves, there
is still work for us to do in as
sisting the industry, which is
giving us and so many thousands
of others like us, our living, to
maintain itself in the face of all
the adverse legislation and un
fair propaganda which is contin
ually being levelled at it from
some sources.
I am very much in favor of
everybody connected in any way
with the coin operated machine
industry working together in the
spirit of coperation for the good
of the entire industry. Unless
we do so, we shall find defeat
confronting us in many sections.
It is a time for all of us to pre
sent a united front to the difficult
problems now confronting the
industry.
