the washing motions anyway before

/\NE of the most gruesome tales in
all history is the story of the
Black Hole of Calcutta.
In 1756 Suraz-ud-Dowlah, at the
age of 19, became nabob of Bengal.
He was an impulsive and headstrong
individual, and soon broke with the
British authorities in India. Gathering
an army about him he marched to
Calcutta to free some of his men
who were being held captive there.
The British soldiers, however, had
whisked the prisoners away before
his arrival. Angered at being out
witted in this maneuver, Dowlah
seized 146 employees of the British
India Company and ordered that they
be locked in a cell indefinitely. For
their confinement he chose an under
ground room 18 feet long by 14 feet
wide with only two tiny windows.
The little cell was piled from floor
to roof with humanity.
To make
matters even worse, the country was
in its hottest season of the year, the
month of June. On the following
day the British troops were able to
drive Dowlah’s guards away from the
cell, but when the door was finally
broken open it was found that only
23 of the 146 victims remained alive.
The British government has erected
a monument on the site of the little
prison and each year people come
from all parts of India to respect
the memories of those who perished
in the tragedy.

i^ A M E L S once roamed the desert
country in the southwestern part
of the United States. In 1856 and
1857 Jefferson Davis, Secretary of
War, imported two shiploads of
camels from Egypt and Asia Minor,
believing that by using these “ships
of the desert” most of the difficulties
coincident to transporting freight
across the arid regions to the west
would be overcome. The animals were
landed at Indianola, Texas and sent
inland to Camp Verde. Under the
direction of Greek and Turkish drivers
who had been brought over especially
for this purpose, caravans traveled
a route from Texas through New
Mexico and Arizona to Colorado.
Considerable public opinion was
aroused against the use of imported
animals and drivers. In the face of
this opposition, however, the experi
ment was continued for a number of
years until the Civil War broke out.
Then, because the interest of the na
tion was turned away temporarily
from everything that did not pertain
directly to the conflict, and because
all shipping of goods outside the war
zone was halted, the caravan trains
could find nothing to transport. The
drivers were sent home and the
camels were either sold to circuses
and carnivals or turned loose on the
plains. For a number of years after
ward travelers reported seeing the
camels roaming the deserts. They are
now believed to be extinct.
