A U TO M A TIC AGE
Had Wrong Idea
Marinette, Wis.— Two local young
men were arrested here after police
said they had walked into three local
taverns, picked up coin machines and
walked out. The youths said that in
asmuch as the machines were illegal
they believed they had not been guil
ty of any crime in appropriating sev
eral of them for themselves.
dred persons in the hall, standing in
line in front of the machines aw ait
ing an opportunity to play them.
When he came outside he asked the
officer if there ever was any trouble
in the gambling hall. He was told
that not long before a Scot lost five
pounds to the 1-arm bandit and seiz
ing an axe was attempting to break
open the machine to retrieve his
money when he was stopped by the
policeman.

Londoners Wait
in Line to Play
Two years ago a Carrollton, Mo.,
man was visiting in London and was
curious about seeing a large crowd
always in front of a small building.
He inquired of a London policeman
standing at the door and was told
that inside were thirty-six American
coin-operated machines, eighteen on
each of two counters. The bobby told
the visitor there were only four places
m London that had these machines
and that the license was ten pounds
a year, about $50.
The American went inside. He es

One of the faults with counter
model stick gum machines made in
the past has been the jam m ing of
gum which occurs when such ma
chines are turned upside down. Irv
ing Mitchell of D. Robbins & Co.,
Brooklyn, N. Y., whose inventive and
mechanical genius is well known,
made a serious study of this fault.
After trying a variety of means for
overcoming this fault, he finally hit
upon a simple mechanical principle
which did the trick. This new fea
ture is now being installed on all
stick gum machines made by D. Rob
bins & Co.
Mistakes Fire Alarm
for Gum Machine
Cheyenne, Wyo., Ju ly 12.— Sirens
wailed, police cars dashed about, and
Gov. Leslie A. Miller yelled, “ Holy
smoke, what’s goin’ on?” as h a lf the
fire equipment of Cheyenne gathered
in front of the capitol. I t was all
because Austin Cotton, 7, had turned
the key in the statehouse alarm.
Tearfully he explained: “ I thought
it was a chewing gum machine.”
