Too many operators are afraid to
stand up for their rights, believes
Edward Clarke, veteran Chicago
operator. They refuse to put up a
fight for their machines and the privi
lege of operating them even when
they are 100 per cent in the right,
he pointed out to us recently. Early
in July, police in Waukegan, 111.
picked up a large number of Clarke’s
machines as well as machines belong
ing to other operators. Clarke im
mediately brought suit for replevin
of his machines and was successful.
He was the only operator to obtain
his machines from the police at the
time we talked to him. It is Clarke’s
opinion that operators would not
have so much trouble if they showed
a little fight.
He is also of the opinion that oper
ators have only themselves to blame
for the high commissions they have
to pay locations since it is the result
of chiseling into another operator’s
location. Clarke says he respects the
other m an’s location.
“There are
plenty of locations,” stated Clarke,
“so why try to chisel on your fellow
operator. He will only turn around
and do the same to you, and you both
lose.”
Clarke is a large operator of all
types of machines. He regards his
extensive route of scales as better
than money in the bank. “I can go
out anytime that I need money," said
Clarke, “and get $100 out of my
scales in a few hours time.”
