A ballyhoo is used at both entrances,-
while the arcade is open, which is daily, in
cluding Sunday from 8 a. m. to 2 a. m. The
only form o f advertising used is the bally,
and a special play is made fo r the patrons
o f the nearby theatres. A special play is
also made fo r soldiers and sailors. In close
proximity is a club fo r the permanent sol
diers and sailors, resulting in large num
bers of the service men being available in
that section every day and night on their
leaves.
A t the Bowdoin Square Arcade in Bos
ton, the business conies from two directions.
There are two entrances to this arcade. Sup
plementing the main entrance from Bowdoin
Square, is a subsidiary entrance from How
ard Street, at the rear. This is possible be
cause o f the arcade being located on the
street floor of a corner building, although
not exactly on the corner o f the junction of
Howard Street with two companion squares,
Scollay and Bowdoin.
In the Bowdoin Square Arcade are 75 d if
ferent machines, including moving pictures,
cigarette vending, candy vending, gum
vending, ball and pin games, miniature
pool and billiards, miniature bowling, ex
exercisers, bag puncher, weight lifter,
and, a sample o f about every coin
machine manufactured and permitted in
operation. A t the Howard Street entrance
is a burlesque theatre and a combination
movie and vaudeville theatre.
The Bowdoin Square Arcade is in the
midst o f one o f the most heavily traversed
sections o f Boston, and a rendezvous for
transients. The bally recommends the ar
cade as a place to wait fo r friends, or kill
a little time by playing the machines, also
as a place to wait fo r a New Y ork bus line,
with base nearby, and fo r trains at the
North Station, only a short distance away.
This arcade is one o f the busiest o f coin
machine quarters anywhere, and fo r the
past 15 years, it has continued to be popular
and profitable.
