that 400 men have been indicted for
operating slot machines in that city. Both the owners and opera­
tors, and the merchants in whose places the machines were found
were arrested and indicted. The Atlanta lawyers, at least, will
make some money out of this movement.
Men who operate slot machines are very foolish not to have on
their routes some legitimate vending machines at the same time.
In fact we have come in contact with a lot of slot machine operators
lately who are buying different types of vending machines to oper­
ate, both as a sideline and something to fall back on. The trouble
with the slot machine operators is that they are always looking for
the big money; and yet in the long run they never have any money,
because they are always in hot water.
Some states have a law designating a slot machine operator as
a gambler, and they can be picked up at any time under that stat­
ute. However, if they have on their route a large number of legi-
mate machines they can show a means of livelihood, and they
always have the defense that they were servicing slot machines in-
