that 400 men have been indicted for
operating slot machines in that city. Both the owners and opera
tors, and the merchants in whose places the machines were found
were arrested and indicted. The Atlanta lawyers, at least, will
make some money out of this movement.
Men who operate slot machines are very foolish not to have on
their routes some legitimate vending machines at the same time.
In fact we have come in contact with a lot of slot machine operators
lately who are buying different types of vending machines to oper
ate, both as a sideline and something to fall back on. The trouble
with the slot machine operators is that they are always looking for
the big money; and yet in the long run they never have any money,
because they are always in hot water.
Some states have a law designating a slot machine operator as
a gambler, and they can be picked up at any time under that stat
ute. However, if they have on their route a large number of legi-
mate machines they can show a means of livelihood, and they
always have the defense that they were servicing slot machines in-

cidentally for someone else and were not the owners, which is most
always the case.
Slot machine operators who live permanently in a community
are very foolish if they do not make the vending machine their
principal business and operate slot machines when conditions are
favorable and only as a side line.
We have met a lot of slot machine operators who are pretty wise
birds and if they would devote their evident ability and experience
along legitimate lines they would be better off in the long run. The
easy money does not last; and certainly the game last longer when
it is operated on the side with a minimum of risk.
An Interesting Feature
Of the Operating Business
is the notable change in the
class of men entering this field. W e have come in contact lately
with men who have made a success in other lines of business and
Who were attracted to the possibilities of money making by operat
ing routes of vending machines of all kinds.
Within the last few days we have received subscriptions from a
Presbyterian minister in Florida, and a doctor of medicine in Los
Angeles. When professional men see the possibilities of vending
Machines it is a sign that high class men are coming into the field.
W e also note how these men go about things. They want to learn
all there is to know about the trade. When men are inclined to
start where others leave off, profiting by the previous experience
° f others in the trade, they are bound to make a success.
There Is Such a Thing
As Being a Good Fellow
but the individual vending
Machine operators of Chicago have not been given a square deal by
Commissioner of Health Herman N. Bundesen. The commissioner
Sets up in public places once in a while and sheds copious tears
When he relates what a hard time he had in his struggle to get up
ln the world. And it seems to us that a man who comes from the
common run of people would have some soft spot in his heart for
the next fellow in the same category. Yet, the commissioner makes
