There is a m ovem ent on fo o t to
reduce incom e taxes and to repeal all
the “ Nuisance T a x es,” n ow collected
on autom obiles, jew elry, th eatre ad
m issions, cam eras, vending m achines,
etc.
L ast year taxes w ere reduced and
som e “ nuisance ta xes” abolished, but
new ones w ere pu t in their place,
w hich on the w hole did n ot am ount
to such a reduction as the people
im agined.
L ast year an attem pt w as made to
raise the ta x on ven din g m achines
from 5 to 10 percent, but b y strenu
ous effort on the pa rt o f a fe w this
action w as d efea ted ; and instead, the
law w as made to cover all coin oper
ated devices, w hereas b e fo re coin de
vices that wrere n ot classed as m er
chandise vendors w ere excluded.
The vending m achine trade is not
organized as m ost oth er industries are
and fo r that reason harm ful legisla
tion is likely to find the vending m a
chine industry “ asleep at the sw itch ;”
and it is on ly natural th at legislators
w ill, to som e extent, fo llo w the line
o f least resistance and g overn them
selves b y the hue and cry o f the
people.
It beh ooves everyone interested in
vending m achines to see o r w rite their
Congressm en and Senators in an
effort to have the tax on vending m a
chines w iped out.
In the first place, our industry has
paid this tax fo r som e years and the
ta x was virtually increased last year.
Secondly, ven din g m achines are a
positive n ecessity in this day and age,
and our law -m akers should be m ade
to l’ealize that a vending m achine is
a la bor-savin g m eans o f distributing
various com m odities and that n oth ing
should be done to hurt the develop
m ent o f the vending m achine busi
ness, w hich is each year becom in g

at large.
A w ord to the wise is sufficient; so
let us all g et busy and w atch the
p rogress o f tax legislation and put
in a w ord or w rite a letter w henever
the occasion m ay require.
