Symptoms: Game locks-up with partial or
all video information frozen on the
screen. This can be recovered from,
temporarily, by powering off and on.
So~ution: If your system is experiencing
this problem, have a qualified Technician
perform the following IOOdifications to the
top, large C.P.U. Board (834-5797).
ftk>dification: On IC 45, place across pins
4 and 7, also pins 6 and 7 -a 220 ohm
resi~or in parallel with a 100 pf
capacitor. The 220 ohm Resistors are 1/4
watt and the 100 pf capacitors are ceramic
discs. See Diagram.
These are available at any electronic
parts store for less than $1.00. If
need~d, sega can supply these parts by

Atari STAR WARS Monitor Problems
By John Batistic

If you have a problem with your Atari
color X-Y roonitor in your STAR WAFS game
and the problem originates in the high-
voltage transformer assembly, you have
really got a problem! The transformer in
that assembly is no longer available. That
is the official word from Atari. Atari j.s
suggesting that you purchase an entire
rooni tor through your local distributor.·
I would like to offer an alternative that
might fit your requirements without buying
a thing. If you have an old Atari 'IEMPEST
or SPACE DUEL that is not too critical to
your route, you can use the roonitor to get
your STAR WAFS up and running.
The ironitor in the above rnentioned games
is a Wells Gardner, and can still be
repaired. Parts are still obtainable. Take
the roonitor out of TEMPEST, and roount the
whole thing in STAR WAFS. The connections
are identical -so the TEMPEST roonitor will
just plug right in. All you need do is
make some minor adjustments, and you will
be back in business.
Unfortunately, this will not work in a
sit-down cabinet because the screen is 25
inches. Some people are saving any working

transformer assenblies for their sit-down
cabinets, and using the Wells Gardner for
their unrights. This type of action could
keep both models up and running for an
extended period, thus allowing extra life
of all your STAR WARS games.
I hope this bit of information helps some
of you that have had STAR WARS games out
of order. Please remember that you can use
the cabinet after removing the Wells
Gardner rronitor for a conversion by
inserting a raster-scan monitor. You can
make two games, with the above suggestion,
that will earn, money out of pieces that
were dead wood.

RING KING IOCK-UP/NOT STATIC RELATED.
If you are experiencing occasional freeze-
ups that have been determined as not being
caused by static discharges, there are
several modifications that can be
performed that should eliminate the
problem. Oleck to see if the suspect PCB
set has the following modifications and
perform them if necessary.
a) DATA EAST PCB SE!':
The top PCB (DE-0224) may have a Z-80A at
location 6C. Change to a Z-80B type
device. The lower PCB (DE-0225) may have a
Z-80A at location 14F. Change this to a
Z-80B type device.
Check for a capacitor modification on the
lower pcb (DE-0225) at location SC
(74IS08), between pins 7 and 11. This
should have a 100 pf, 50 vdc ceramic disc
at this location. Add this modification if
it has not been done already.
b) ~PIACE PCB SE!':
The top PCB may have a Z-80A at location
llE @d 9H! __ Change th~se to Z-80B type
devices. Check the Eprom at location 9J
and verify that it is a 250 nanosecond
device or faster. Refer to the Eprom Speed
Chart (c) for specific speed information.
Change the Eprom if it is 300 nanoseconds
or slower.
Add two 220 pf capacitors on the top PCB
at the following locations: 14H, 74LS14,
between pins 3 and 7, and 13H, 74LS08,
between pins 3 and 7.
Wl'E: If any of these modifications are
already installed on your PCB set, do not
duplicate. Contact Data F.ast's Service
Departnent for any roore available
information.
