U. S. Civil Service Commission Announces Three
Opportunities for Music Teachers in Indian Service.
The United States Civil Service Commission an-
nounces the following open competitive examinations:
Music teacher, elementary (grades 1-6), $1,380.
Music teacher, junior high school (grades 7-9),
$1,500.
Music teacher, senior high school (grades 10-12),
$1,680.
Applications for these positions must be on file with
the Civil Service Commission at Washington, D. C,
not later than January 3, 1928. The examinations are
to fill vacancies in the Indian service, and in posi-
tions requiring similar qualifications.
The entrance salaries are indicated above. A pro-
bationary period of six months is required; advance-
ment after that depends upon individual efficiency,
increased usefulness, and the occurrence of vacancies
in higher positions. For quarters, fuel and light, a
deduction of $180 a year will be made from teachers'
salaries of $1,300 up to and including $2,040 a year.
The duties will be to organize and train mixed
choruses, quartets, and other musical organizations
and to give vocal lessons and instrumental lessons,
particularly on the piano. Competitors will not be
required to report for examination at any place, but
will be rated on their education, training and ex-
perience.
Full information may be obtained from the United
States Civil Service Commission at Washington,
D. C, or the secretary of the United States Civil
Service board of examiners at the post office or cus-
tom house in any city.

SEVENTH WEEK OF OPERA
Chicago Civic Opera Company Continues to Fill the
Calendar with Rare Lyric Treats.
Having reached the crest of the season, Chicago's
Civic Opera continues to crowd the calendar with
rare lyric treats.
The seventh festive week of Chicago's most lavish
lyric season will open with the usual suburban spe-
cial matinee on Sunday afternoon, December 11, with
an all-star cast in the most tuneful of operas,
"Martha." Edith Mason, Tito Schipa, Irene Pav-
loska, Virgilio Lazzari and Vittorio Trevisan will
have leading roles in which they have frequently
won the plaudits of enthusiastic audiences, and
Roberto Moranzoni will conduct the tuneful, spar-
kling work.
"Tosca" will be sung Monday evening by the bril-
liant cast which gave so exciting a performance of
Puccini's tragedy at its one earlier hearing of the
winter. Claudia Muzio will be the Roman singer;
Charles Hackett, the painter-patriot, and Vanni-
Marcoux will add his tense characterization of the
villainous police chief. Vittorio Trevisan will be
heard as the sacristan, one of this expert comedian's
finest achievements. Giorgio Polacco will conduct,
and the opera will be followed by a ballet, danced
by the entire terpsichorean corps, with solos by Maria
Yurieva and Vechslav Swoboda, Charles Lauwers
conducting.
