GEORGE J. DOWLING'S VIEWS.
George J. Dowling, president of The Cable Com-
pany, Chicago, says that so far as interesting school
children in piano playing contests goes the method
helps somewhat in selling pianos, but piano men must
employ other methods even more effective than that.
He has been studying on the problem a good deal
WILLIAMS
PIANOS
The policy of the Williams House is and always
has been to depend upon excellence of product
instead of alluring price. Such a policy doea not
attract.bargtiin hunters. It does, however, win the
hearty approval and support of a very desirable
•nd substantial patronage.

lately, evidently, and he says the trade must interest
the grown-ups in piano buying and that the principal
question to be settled is how to create this interest.
This seems to be a very important question that a
great many dealers and manufacturers are studying
upon as well as Mr. Dowling. The answer to it just
now is a desideratum greatly to be desired.
W. A. BURKE'S GOOD TRIP.
JESSE FRENCH FOR SCHOOL.
The parochial school of St. John at Vincennes, Ind.,
which is conducted under the supervision of the
Sisters of Providence, with headquarters at Terre
Haute, Ind., purchased a style "S" Jesse French &
Sons grand piano trhough the Wilking Music Com-
pany. This is only one of the many Jesse French &
Sons pianos in use in the schools under the super-
vision of this order of nuns. Mr. Frank Wilking
reports September one of the best months in the his-
tory of the company. During the month several
period styles in the Apollo piano were sold.
MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR MISS BLACK
Memorial services will be held for Miss Blanche
Stuart Black, Sunday, December 11, at 4 p. m., in
Erie Chapel, 1347 West Erie street, Chicago, where
Miss Black was a worker for a number of years.
On November 17 Miss Black ,who wasc confidential
secretary to Geo. P. Bent for a great many years,
was killed in an automobile accident.
A recent letter to C. Alfred Wagner, president of
the American Piano Company, New York, from
Camille Decreus, director of the American Conserva-
toire at Fontainebleau Palace Seine et Marne, France,
conveyed in a very graceful manner the warm thanks
of the conservatory for the part played by the Chick-
ering Piano Company in making possible the award
of three important prizes given to the best pianists
of the Session. Associated with Chickering in mak-
ing possible these prizes, which took the form of
liberal scholarships, were the makers of the Erard
piano and the Pleyel piano, both famous French
makes.
M. Ferguson Webster, of Pittsburgh, Pa., was the
winner of the first prize,, the second prize being
awarded to Miss Talma of New York city. The third
prize was divided between Miss Florence Stage and
Mr. Sukeenig, both of New York city.
DESIGNS ARTISTIC CASES.
A department of piano case designs has been cre-
ated by Sherman, Clay & Co., with W. Ambrose
Whitner, an interior decorator and expert in art and
Period designing, as manager. The department has
the same purposes as the art guidance sections which
prove a great success in big furniture and carpet
stores here and there. Many piano factories have
facilities for the customer to get something special in
a piano case design. Sherman, Clay & Co. leads the
way for the progressive piano retailers.
Arthur Somervell, Chief Inspector of Music to
the London, Eng., Board of Education, told a con-
ference of teachers recently that "if there were more
singing of the old songs and more folk dancing there
would be far less Communism in the country."
GARLAND MUSIC COMPANY QUITS.
Usually when a piano dealer goes out of business
he turns over the store to a successor. But with the
Garland Music Co., at Frederick, Okla., the unusual
has happened, for letters sent out to it are returned
rubber-stamped by the postmaster: "Gone out of
business; no successor."
The Original Small Piano
Made and marketed by specialists in small
pianos. Valuable territory still open.
Write for our effective sales plan.
D. L. LOOMIS VISITS CHICAGO.
Delbert L. Loomis, executive secretary of the Na-
tional Association of Piano Merchants, has been in
Chicago a few days this week in the interest of work
he is doing for the association. Mr. Loomis is taking
hold of his new line of work with vim, and seems
to enjoy it.

R. A. Burke, sales manager Story & Clark Piano
Company, 173 North Michigan avenue, Chicago, who
does considerable traveling at different times, re-
turned to Chicago a few days ago after a successful
trip through the trade in Oklahoma, Louisiana, Ar-
kansas and Texas. He found the cotton-growing
sections prosperous as well as the oil regions and
agriculture generally doing well. Mr. Burke has
familiarized himself with causes for Southern pros-
perity for several years past, so that a survey of con-
ditions, present or prospective, in the Southwest or
the Southeast by him at any time is apt to be
reliable.

LOUIS A. HOLTZMAN DIES
President of Henry Holtzman & Sons Co. Succumbs
in Wheeling While on Trip.
Louis A. Holtzman, age 63, of Columbus, Ohio,
president of the Henry Holtzman & Sons Co., manu-
facturers of piano benches, stools, scarfs, covers, etc.,
died in Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, W. Va., on
November 22, having been ill only a few days. His
death was due to cerebral embolism. He was appar-
ently in good health, and was on the last lap of a
business trip through the South and East when
stricken in a Wheeling hotel. He was moved to the
hospital, but never regained consciousness.
Mr. Holtzman had been identified practically all his
life with the piano bench manufacturing business.
The company was founded in the '60's in Pittsburgh,
Pa., by his father, Henry Holtzman, and 35 years ago
moved to Columbus, where it has since been in con-
tinuous operation. He was one of three brothers
in the company, one of whom survives him.
E. V. Galloway, Chicago manager of the company,
attended the funeral. Mr. Holtzman was a member
of Magnolia Lodge of Masons and the Elks. He was
an accomplished pianist, and was personally ac-
quainted with a large portion of the piano dealers of
the country.
He is survived by his wife, Clara Z. Holtzman; six
children, Wilhelmina, Clara, Henry, Francis, Mary
and Augusta, and by his mother, Mrs. W. C. Holtz-
man, and by his brother, Charles E. Holtzman.
NEW ZEALAND TARIFF.
British made talking machine records are now ad-
mitted duty free into New Zealand while records of
foreign origin will have to pay 20 per cent. The
ruling became effective July 1, 1927.
INFLUENCES MUSIC EVENTS.
That the National Bureau for the Advancement of
Music has established itself firmly as an authoritative
source of information, and that its recommendations
actually influence the musical policies of local or-
ganizations, is evidenced unmistakably by a letter
just received by C. M. Tremaine, the director, from
Mrs. Minnie Meeker, supervisor of school music in
Lakeland, Fla., asking his advice on a junior high

Homer Neer and Leslie C. Gorsuch, with authorized
capital of $10,000. Mr. Sun is president; Mr. Neer,
treasurer, and Mr. Gorsuch, secretary. Mr. Long-
brake, besides writing many of the songs which the

New Combinations of Tints and Variations Show
with Variety of Combinations.
New color designs recently prepared by the Duco
Color Advisory Service which are now being used
on nationally known grand pianos include the fol-
lowing:
The first design shows the body in French gray,
high lighted with a deeper tone of gray. The inside
of the lid is finished in old rose, and an old rose
stripe is used as a decoration on the sides of the case
and on the music desk.
The second is a new period design in the Italian
Renaissance manner. The case is entirely done in
natural antique finished walnut, and the legs, which
are carved after the manner of the period, are poly-
chrome, in old blue, orange, Pompeian red, and old
gold, with touches of green. The inside of the lid is
finished in Pompeian red.
The third is a Chinese Chippendale design in
which the whole case is in black with a dull finish,
while in the inside of the case is Chinese red, high-
lighted with a dark brown. The supports which join
the three legs are carved in Chinese design, lined
with red. The Chinese motifs on the case are picked
out or accented with red. Chinese red felt is used
throughout to carry out the design. Another grand
piano in Chinese Chippendale design, a sister-piece
to the above, has been done in Chinese green.
