THE MUSIC TRADE REVIEW, MARCH, 19U
With a few notable exceptions, retail
piano houses do not attach sufficient im-
portance to advertising. As a sales influ-
ence, its power can be set to almost any
height of production within the vision of
those who use it.
URGES NATIONAL CAMPAIGN
I should like to suggest that you piano
dealers exert every ounce of your influ-
ence toward the inauguration of a nation-
wide campaign sponsored and paid for
by all piano manufacturers. If this can
be done, YOUR advertising job will be
just started. It will be your responsibility,
through local advertising, to identify your
store with the nation-wide advertising of
the manufacturers.
Regardless, however, of what the manu-
facturers may do a year or two hence, you
can start now to sell pianos through the
right kind of advertising in your home
town newspaper. If you retailers will de-
termine to let advertising occupy a posi-
tion of importance second only to that of
general management in your stores you
will find, in time, that it deserves the high
rank you gave it.

Marks Celebrates
Forty-Seventh Year
As an outgrowth of the battle between
ASCAP and BMI, U. S. Music, Inc., has
been formed to fill the gap left in populai
music on the radio. Behind this new
organization, which has already come to
the fore with such songs as "It Could
Never Be the Same," "This Is My First
Night Without You." "In ondon Not So
Very Long Ago" and "America Forever
Free" and Homer Sipe and Nalda Nardi,
the latter, formerly associated with Radio
Station WMCA as program director.
Forty-seven years of music publishing
was celebrated this February by the Ed-
ward B. Marks Music Corp., pioneer in
the field, sponsor of some of America's
greatest hits, and owner of a catalog that
ranges through the finest classical, stand-
ard, popular and Latin American music.
Almost half a century of publishing
finds Edward B. Marks actively directing
a firm launched in the days when he rode
to Tony Pastor's in a horse-drawn street-
car to induce Lottie Gilson to plug "My
Mother Was a Lady" (or If lack Were
Only Here).
Since then, the Marks catalog of 15,000
copyrights has been augmented by the
works of Sibelius, Debussy, Prokofieff, de
Falla and many others whose music is
performed at concerts, over the air and
through recordings for a rapidly growing
audience.
Cuban, Mexican and South American
music, now an integral part of America's
singing and dancing, was brought to the
States by the Marks Corporation. E. B.
Marks, whose publishing astuteness was
gravely questioned when he "went
Latin," paved the way for the present
tango-rumba-conga sweep with the in-
troduction in 1930 of "The Peanut Vendor"
and "Mama Inez." Such works as "Mala-
guena" and "Andalucia" by Ernesto
Lecuona were later added and have
proved to be more lasting music than
thousands of fly-by-night domestic num-
bers.
Instrumental Solos Listed
The Music Publishing Holding Corp.,
New York, is exploitikng a series of instru-
mental solos for clarinet and piano, saxo-
phone and piano, cornet and piano and
trombone and piano.
There are the thirteen numbers for the
clarinet and piano including a "Fantasy
on Gounod's Faust Waltzes," "Gypsy
Love Song," "I'm Falling in Love with
Someone" and many others of similar
character.
In the saxophone and piano series there
are sixteen numbers for the alto sax and
"Just A Memory" for Soprano, alto, tenor
and baritone sax and "Indian Love Call"
for the soprano, alto and tenor sax. Thir-
teen numbers are listed for the cornet and
nine for the trombone.
MUSIC DEALERS
Community song books, American and
European folk songs, piano and vocal
numbers, and music for orchestras and
bands round out the Marks library and
make it comprehensive and suitable for
all types of listeners, musicians, and occa-
sions.
Robbins Publishes
Clarinet Book
Artie Shaw, whose desire to pursue a
literary career prompted him to seek
temporary retirement two years ago to
write a book, has realized his ambitions
this month with the publication of "Artie
Shaw Clarinet Method," issued by Rob-
bins Music Corporation.
"For the past several years/' com-
mented Shaw, "I've been confronted -with
queries from student-musicians who de-
plored the lack of modern clarinet informa-
tion in most study books. In this new
clarinet study, I've tried to combine an
academic study with the modern style
interpretation."
Arnold Brilhart, desiger of Enduro
Reeds and the Brilhart Mouthpieces and
one of radio's greatest saxophonists, has
spent the last few months editing the
book checking Artie Shaw's recordings
for etudes and solos and assisting in its
compilations.
"The collaboration," said music pub-
lisher Jack Robbins, "insures the student
of the most expert studies and exercises
yet devised for style development, tongu-
ing, fingering, scales, chords, improvisa-
tion and other technical advancements
unobtainable elsewhere."
"Artie Shaw Clarinet Method" is the
latest addition to Robbins Series of Mod-
ern Methods, which includes "Gene
Krupa Drum Method," "Jimmy Dorsey
Saxophone Methods," "Bob Haggart Bass
Method," "Joe Venuti Violin Rhythm,"
Jack Teagarden Trombone Studies,"
"Harry James Studies and Improvisations
for Trumpet/' and others by Bud Freeman,
Bunny Berigan, etc.
"A special addition to the new Artie
Shaw Clarinet book is the inclusion of
Shaw's clarinet solos of "Deep Purple/'
"Rose Room/' "Just You—Just Me," "I'm
Coming Virginia/' "My Blue Heaven, etc.
