tried his hand at writing popular songs, and,
meeting with not much success, finally decided
that his style of writing could be developed to
much better advantage among the better class
of songs, known in trade circles as standard
numbers. In this viewpoint he was right, his

N e w Irish Ballad O u t
"The Dreams of My Irish Colleen," a waltz
song, words and music by William F. Deuty,
and published by Bourdon-Deuty Music Publish-
ing Co., 47 Laurel street, Hartford, Conn., is the
popular type of Irish ballad that has a wide
appeal. The publisher of the number is carry-
ing on an active campaign in its behalf and the
song, from all early indications, has possibilities
of reaching a substantial figure in point of
sales.
j Mills Gets "Keep Smiling"
i Jack Mills, Inc., New York, has secured the
publishing rights to "Keep Smiling," melody
number by Charles Kerr and George Reilly,
which has been one of the favorites with the
radio audience who listened in to Station WIP
Philadelphia, from which Kerr and his orchestra
broadcast regularly. "Keep Smiling" will soon
be released as a feature of the orchestra cata-
log of the Mills organization and is likely to go
strong.

Paul Specht, WJZ and WJY broadcaster and
director of the Alamac Hotel Orchestra, is of-
fering a portable phonograph and. a set of his
autographed Columbia records for the best one-
hundred-word essay on whether the classics or
jazz is the most popular form of musical enter-
tainment among the country's people at the
present time.
Paul Specht plays both varieties, but there
appears to be a widespread controversy on the
subject and the noted impresario wants his
radio audience to settle the problem once for
all. There are no rules to the contest other
than that letters should be limited to one hun-
