Patent Recently Issued on Porcelain Key-Facing
Material for Pianos and Organs
WASHINGTON, D. C, October 9.—John E. Evans,
Lima, O., was last week granted Patent No.
1,200,182 for a porcelain key-facing for musical
instruments.
This invention relates to improvements in key-
boards for pianos, organs or the like, and more
particularly to the covering or facing of the
white keys thereof.
The object of the invention is to provide
a facing for keys of this character which will
not deteriorate with age; is not dependent upon
animal growth for its supply; and is very cheap
to manufacture and effective in practice.
Another object is to provide a key-facing with
simple and efficient means for interlocking en-
gagement with the body of the key to prevent
all possibility of its becoming detached.

PATENTS IMPROVED CHIMES

ROLAND H. MAYLAND DEAD
Roland H. Mayland, of Freeport, L. I., one of
the best-known makers of musical instruments
and chimes in this country, passed away last
week aged seventy years. In addition to his
activities in the musical world, he was active in
fraternal circles, was one of the leading mem-
bers of the New York State Firemen's Associa-
tion, and was also vice-president of the Free-
port Board of Education.

Bristol & Barber recently leased the entire
building at 111 East Fourteenth street, New
York City, the ground floor of which is now
occupied by the Pathephone Sales Co., which
is controlledby the Bristol & Barber firm. The
firm will occupy its new quarters, which are
located next to Steinway Hall, as soon as the
present tenants vacate the building. The offices
of the Bristol & Barber firm and the Pathephone
Sales Co. will be combined on the second floor
of the building, while the line of stools, cabinets,
benches, scarfs, etc., carried by the firm will
be displayed and stored on other floors in the
structure.
WASHINGTON, D. C, October 9.—Patent No.
1,200,370 for a percussion musical instrument was
last week granted to John B. Kohler, Chicago,
111., which he has assigned to the Kohler-
Liebich Co., Wilmington, Del.
This invention relates to musical instruments,
of the type known as dinner chimes, wherein
a tone is obtained by tapping a sounding mem-
ber lightly, and has for its object to provide
certain improvements in the construction of the
same.
