MONUMENTJO GRIEG.
Life-Size Bronze Bust of Famous Norwegian
Composer Unveiled in Brooklyn, N. Y.
A monument to the Norwegian composer, Ed-
vard Hagerup Grieg, was dedicated last Saturday
afternoon at the Flower Garden in Prospect Park,
Brooklyn. It consists of a life-size bronze bust on
a granite pedestal, and is placed in a group of sim-
ilar memorials to poets, writers and musicians at
the head of the larger lake. The monument was
presented to the city by the Norwegian societies of
Brooklyn. The ceremonies of unveiling were at-
tended by 3,000 persons.
Grieg was born at Bergen, Norway, June 15,
1843. He studied music at Leipsic, and later with
Liszt, to whom he dedicated his "Foran Sydens
Kloster." Of his most important compositions the
"Peer Gynt Suite" is perhaps the most widely
kno.wn, and of his smaller works the short piano
compositions are popular.

THAT the Music Publishers' Board of Trade
continues to meet with regularity and is working
strongly fn.r reforms in the trade despite the dis-
couraging predictions of those on the outside.
THAT the proposed war against those engaged
in the mechanical reproduction of music has
reached the point where one publisher actually an-
nounces that he will not grant any nro.re permits
for the mechanical reproduction of his songs.
THAT if all the popular publishers take this
stand, which may be necessary and desirable, some
of the smaller concerns will have to hustle around
for some new means for paying the rent to take
the place of the royalty checks.
THAT, with the head of the United Booking
Offices coming out as a song censor, some inter-
esting developments are to be looked for in that
direction.
THAT it is surprising how many of the publish-
ers and their representatives find it necessary to
make their headquarters at Atlantic City fo,r ex-
tended periods this time of the year.
THAT "By the Beautiful Sea" seems to have an
edge on other songs at that popular resort at this
time, with Remick's "I'm in Love with the Mother
of My Best Girl" showing up well among the
ballads.
THAT, according to an alleged authority, it re-
quires eighty-four tons of power to play a piano
an hour.
THAT some of the pianists in the publishing
houses may demand that they be paid per horse-
power of energy expended instead of by the day.
THAT Walter Eastman, manager of the branches
of Chappell & Co. in New York and Toronto, re-
turned to New York this week from a short stay
at the Toronto branch, where he found conditions
satisfactory.
THAT the fight being waged by Chappell & Co.
against the sellers of cheap reprints of copyrighted
music has had the effect of cutting down that
class of business to a noticeable extent.

BERLIN WRITINQJtAGTIME OPERA.
According to reports, Irving Berlin is at the
present time working on an ambitious comic opera,
all of the music of which is in ragtime, and the
piece is to be produced in the fall by Charles
Dillingham. Inasmuch as Berlin cannot, according
to reports, read or write music, the proposition o.f
•turning out a full-fledged comic opera is no small
one.
The Steller-Winson Piano Co., Ottumwa, 111.,
will open, August 1, at 219 East Main street.

to Clear Up Some Mysteries.
"Music," according to the definition of Life, "is
a job lot of vibrations manufactured under the
auspices of a labor union and furnished to hotels
and restaurants fo.r the purpose of adding to the
discomfort of the guests. Music is also used for
other purposes. It comes in pianos, harps and
organs, and sometimes, though rarely, in human
beings and phonographs. Babies often furnish
music when least expected and at hours not always
approved of by respectable and God-fearing people.

known as Flossy. In short, music has run the
scale from classic to classy. Like eggs and other
historic back numbers, music is now kept in cold
storage and comes in reels and cans. Hand-made
music is gradually being superseded by the factory-
