Why There Are Misfits
A D A P T A B I L I T Y is a very great essential and there is indeed a small percentage of men who have
/ - \ the right adaptability which qualifies them to fit in almost any place in life and to accommodate
themselves speedily to conditions.
Some salesmen have an easy adaptability so that they are enabled to ingratiate themselves
quickly into the good graces of people with whom they come in contact.
In this way their adaptability immediately becomes available as an asset; but it is surprising how few
men really possess that great asset—adaptability.
A man may possess a mind which is sluggish on a good many things and still make a moderate, and
even at times, marked success in life; but a man with an easy adaptability can succeed in almost any line
in which he wishes to cast his lot.
He can by mere force of mentality make his work appeal to him; and, in order to achieve success in
any undertaking, it is necessary that our vocation should appeal to us.
Just as soon as a man arrives at that condition he takes an interest in his work, without which, essen-
tial elements are lacking that make success possible.
There are many people, however, who do not cultivate the qualities which they possess to the
utmost; and we very frequently see men whose activities have been turned into entirely wrong channels.
I am of the opinion that every person may be expert at a particular kind of work and it is up to him
to find just that kind of employment.
He is so constituted that he can perform some special work much better than others; and, most of
the failures in life are due to the fact that the individual who fails has not succeeded in finding the sort of
labor for which he is temperamentally fitted.
That is why there are so many misfits in life; and, really there is no place for misfits.
Life is too hard a battle and human nature has not changed since the days of Caesar when men
fought with glittering weapons to win gold.
To-day the weapons may be concealed but the object—gold—is the incentive.
At least in most cases.
