CLUB RAISES FUNB WITH
VENDING MACHINES
Good publicity for the coin
machine industry is not lacking.
In Springfield, Illinois, the Amer
ican Business Club’s campaign
to aid crippled children by rais
ing funds through the penny
gum vending machines, has al
ready purchased a movie ma
chine for the children’s enjoy
ment.
Pictures and stories appeared
in all of the local newspapers,
and smaller items about the
achievement have been carried
by the wire services to news
papers all over the country.
The plan of the American
Business Club to raise funds
through penny gum machines
was exclusively reported in the
March, 1942 issue of Automatic
Age. The plan went into effect
early in February, and the suc
cess of the plan is indicated by
the substantial purchase of the
movie equipment.
When its initial project is
having to do with children’s
care where there is a need and
funds are not available.
The gum vending machines
have been placed in office build
ings, factories, departm ent
stores, hotels, taverns, filling sta
tions, and other places of busi
ness throughout Springfield.
Coin machines are aiding the
crippled children of Springfield.
The machines— more than 200 of
them, are on the job collecting
pennies every hour of the day
and night for the kids who didn’t

get a break. Who says that the
machine is without a soul?
The members of the Ameri
can Business Club, are a group of
civic minded business men and
public officials that devote their
entire service program to the
welfare of crippled children.
They found coin machines to be
the answer to their money-rais
ing problems. So the Club en
listed these ideal silent partners
— coin machines— to aid in a
great cause.
The ABC group made an ex-

tensive survey of fund-raising
plans before deciding that the
coin machine method was best.
Coin machines were deemed
best because they could be used
in a non-competitive money-rais
ing campaign that would give
the club a steady, year-round
flow of money into their crippled
children’s fund. And, besides,
who in the community is going
to hesitate in giving when a deli
cious gum is returned to the
donor as part of the bargain?
In this campaign, the Club
drew up a franchise with a vend
ing-machine operator, who pro
vides for the installation and
operation of the gum vending
machines in the city of Spring
field. Under the terms of the
agreement the operator controls
the equipment. The local owner-
operator assumes all liabilities
and taxes, and services the
machines. He also furnishes an
audit for each machine in opera
tion every month.
The Club, as its part of the
agreement, sponsors the loca
tions for the machines and pro
motes the sale of the gum
through its regular activities.
Every location in which a
machine is placed was chosen by
the Club. The Club organized
teams of its members, each of
which made a thorough survey
of one section of the city. Each
likely spot was charted and then
rated 1-2-3 as to its desirability.
As a consequence, the gum vend
ors are exceptionally well located
throughout the city.
Springfield’s Mayor, and the
County’s Sheriff, both Club
members by the way, as well as
other public officials were in
hearty support of the coin
machine plan.
