AID TO OPERATORS PREPARE CASE
AGAINST DISCRIMINATORY TAX
“Lecal operators have em
ployed an attorney to brief a pos
sible case against this city to
prevent local license taxation as
outlined in proposed ordinance.
This license tax has been in ef
fect for several years in this
city, and the long suffering oper
ators have organized to fight if
there is a chance to nullify it.
The enclosed ordinance is an in
crease over the old ordinance.
“Since there has been no liti
gation in our state in the past
against this method of taxation,
our attorney would be glad if we
could furnish him with some
cases from other states. Several
times in the past, you have men
tioned successful fights against
local taxation.
“I am wondering if you have
at hand any information that
would aid us in fighting this or
dinance and if so if you would
supply that information immed
iately in the return air mail
stamped envelope. We must get
our case filed by the 28th if pos
sible, and your immediate atten
tion will be appreciated. I have
long been a subscriber of Auto
matic Age and will personally
appreciate this service.”
Pertinent decisions of local
courts were furnished this sub
scriber. Such decisions are few
because usually, cases fighting
city ordinances taxing vending
machines never get to a court.
When sufficient evidence is sub
mitted to the city council, they
usually come down to earth and
either drop the tax ordinance or
set a tax of a reasonable fee. For
example, in one large city recent
ly, operators got the city ordi
nance changed to 50c tax per
vending machine per year— in
stead of the $5 and $1 tax which
the council had written into the
ordinance— after operators pre
sented tangible evidence that the
high fees were confiscatory.

TIN C A N S FOR
KEEPING SALTED NUTS
The use of clean tin cans has
been reported to be a very practi
cal container for keeping salted
nuts fresh. It also makes servic
ing easier. The 15 or 20 pound
coffee tin can is a good type.
There are many other types of
tin cans with lids which can also
be used for this purpose.
It is advisable to punch a few
holes in the lid of the tin can.
Using tins, salted nuts will be
much fresher looking when they
are placed in the machines. It is
inadvisable to keep salted nuts
in bags or cartons. When nuts
remain in cartons, much of the
valuable oil escapes, as the paper
carton absorbs the moisture or
oil. Leaving nuts around in car
tons, not only makes the nuts
look stale, but it actually hastens
the on-setting of rancidity.
