CHICAGO IN BRIEF
ROM a struggling frontier town in 1830, Chicago's growth to a metropolis ex-
ceeding three million people in less than a century has been the marvel of
F
the world. Chicago is familiarly characterized the great central market, the
country's leading railway center and the city of diversified industry. It is all
of these and more. Bountiful resources of soil, mine and forest and transport,
coupled with the unusual location at the head of Lake Michigan where the lines
of trade east and west and north and south cr ss, give Chicago facilities and
conditions for successfully manufacturing and merchandising a wider variety
of lines than other communities. That Chicago is the greatest potential inland
seaport cannot be disputed. Recently it has attained aeronautical leadership.
Impoltant also is
the fact that Chi-
cago is the largest
city near the coun-
try's
centers
of
population,
manu-
facturing and agri-
cultural wealth.
This great capi-
tal of an inland
empire has a great-
er population with-
in her city limits
than each of 36
states of this coun-
try.
