Attn: John Liikala
Dear John,
Allow me to introduce my-
self: My name is Jim
Dziagwa, Technical Director
at Happ Controls. I read with
interest your column in the
last edition of Star Tech jour-
nal concerning the Happ
Controls Optical Gun PCB,
96-0066-100. It was a good
article and not incorrect,
however I would like to
clarify one point and pass on
some information you may
not be aware of.
In your article regarding
problem 41= 1, where you say
that the six pin plug will not
fit properly because of a space
problem, you recommend re-
moving the plug, bending the
leads and resoldering. While
this will work, it is easier to
simply bend the connector up
(by grasping the pins from
below with your index finger)
while it is still soldered to the
pcb. This is what we do here
at Happ when we assemble
the guns. The pcb has a four
and a six pin plug, making it
a universal replacement for
Happ and Atari guns.
Regarding problem #2, you
recommend adding a lOK
resistor as a pull-up to the
output signal of the pcb. We
have been making this pcb
since October of last year.
Only the first 250 of these
needed this resistor. A few
games would not operate
properly without this resistor,
but most would. We quickly
realized that adding this re-
sistor would fix the problem,
and we began adding it al-
most immediately. All the
guns and gun pcbs we have
sold since late October 1997
have had this resistor in the
circuit. Adding another will
not hurt, so if anyone adds a
resistor to a pcb that already
has one, that will not be a
problem.
You can fax this info or mail
(or email) it to us for con-
sideration. Thank you!
