If you feel your electronics is
pretty strong already, the chal-
lenge then becomes keeping cur-
rent. For this you need to follow
the engineering publications.
Engineering magazines are in-
tended for the circuit designer,
and they are heavy with adver-
tisements. There are also tuto-
rial articles and other instructive
material. Good general maga-
zines are EDN and Electronic De-
sign, both thick and shiny like a
copy of Replay. They are out ev-
ery two weeks. Also interesting
is the EE Times, a weekly news-
paper. Electronic Parts covers
components. All of these publi-
cations are free, but you have to
"qualify" for subscription. In es-
sence they want you to be some-
monitor repair there, but you
certainly will see power supply,
logic, and other useful topics cov-
ered. I read Electronic Servicing
and Technology, a magazine really
aimed at the guys fixing TVs,
VCRs and computer monitors,
but I find enough in it of interest
to make it worth while. Then
again I do repair consumer
goods. There are magazines
aimed at the hobbyists and
techies among us in a number of
areas. Magazines that focus on
building and modifying equip-
ment will generally be more edu-
cational than ones that concen-
trate on what to buy and reviews
of existing products.
one in a position to design prod-
ucts that incorporate the compo-
nents advertised in them. They
are looking for designers, manu-
facturers, purchasers. To check
them out and find a subscription
card, try the library, the nearest
college with a EE program, call
a local engineering firm and ask
for a spare copy. There are also
many very specific engineering
magazines. Laser Optics, Connec-
tor Buyer, Microwave, ESD, Mili-
tary Design, etc.
Learn the basics, build your back-
ground, keep current and never
stop learning, share the knowl-
edge. That's the name of the
game for this guy.
