I am compelled to respond to your
publication of Michael McGougan 's
review of TechFest '95, held during
the ACME show in Reno, Nevada
last Spring. Michael had expressed his
disappointment at the lack of ad-
vanced troubleshooting tips.
I want to let your readers know that
the seminars at TechFest were never
meant to be geared toward the ad-
vanced technician but rather to
present a broad range of quick fixes
and service tips to the tech commu-
nity at large. However, each manu-
facturer was invited to have a service
representative stationed at a nearby
booth to discuss advanced topics and
to provide detailed technical informa-
tion to those that requested it.
Since this was the first TechFest (the
TechFest will be repeated and ex-
panded at ACME '96 in Orlando,
next Spring) many manufacturers
were uncertain of its popularity
among industry technicians and, as
such, were unwilling to commit the
resources necessary to falfill the ex-
pectations of advanced technicians.
The AA.MA was pleased with the
TechFest and has assured broader par-
ticipation for 7996.
I would also like to remind Star Tech
readers and contributors that they are,
by and large, among the most skilled
technicians in the coin-op industry;
an industry that runs the gamut from
the most simple, mechanical devices
to the most advanced, state-of the-art
image processing computer systems. I
do not expect to be able to teach them
much, if anything at all.
At least that's what I thought until I
received the following note attached
to a copy of the STAR*TECH]our-
nal review of TechFest:
Randy: This guy is all wet. The
TechFest was enjoyable and informa-
tive. I've been repairing games to the
board level for 74 years and you still
had things to teach me. -jerry Conley,
Harrah's Lake Tahoe
That note, combined with a half
dozen other letters of thanks and
praise regarding TechFest (including
one from the AAMA show represen-
tatives) leads me to believe we're on
the right track. Jte just need to fine-
tune the program to meet everyone's
needs and expectations. Naturally, I'd
appreciate any input from
STAR*TECH journal readers as
well.
Please feel free to contact me with your
comments and suggestions.
